hi so i am new to dnd and my group just started, we only have the red box and so far we have a halfling rouge that doesn't really know what he wants to do, a power hungry elven wizard that wants to use his powers for good, a elven cleric that wants to be able to summon the dead, and em a dwarven fighter that just wants to be able to have a pet but when i got the chance to get a anocanda as a pet the dm was super against me getting the pet and gave me some really hard checks which the rouge helped me with. We finally got it to calm down after several attempts and me at about 7 health but then the dm said "the snake grows hungry and attacks your group" forcing us to kill it yet when our cleric wants to summon the dead the dm is all for it. Since the dm won't let me get a pet is there anyway that i could convince him or show him that it is ok to let me have a pet?

Well, there are a few themes that give pets.  And the cleric, provided this is the red box beginner's set for 4th edition would be using the heroes of shadow suplement to summon undead, and that takes away from his action economy.  Whereas having a companion character for a pet (like the snake, for example) would give you more than your own action economy.  The themes, one in the feywild book, the other from DDI, allows the player, regardless of class, to have a pet.  However, themes are such that all party memebers should have one if one person does; otherwise they do give a slight edge here or there.

"I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody." --Bill Cosby (1937- )

Vanador: OK. You ripped a gateway to Hell, killed half the town, and raised the dead as feral zombies. We're going to kill you. But it can go two ways. We want you to run as fast as you possibly can toward the south of the town to draw the Zombies to you, and right before they catch you, I'll put an arrow through your head to end it instantly. If you don't agree to do this, we'll tie you this building and let the Zombies rip you apart slowly.
Dimitry: God I love being Neutral.
4th edition is dead, long live 4th edition.
Salla: opinionated, but commonly right.

Hey,

If you just want a pet for roleplaying or thematic reasons, your DM should be happy with it - you must be sure not to, at some point in the future, demand, for example, a perception check for your pet. Or say that your pet can do this or that. Try a small viper rather than an anaconda, for example.

If you want a pet with real benefits, you could go with a theme, or look into taking an arcane multiclass feat followed by the arcane familiar feat (since this is important to you and has been from the beginning, hopefully your DM will be friendly in terms of letting you swap out your starting and second level feat as a retcon). Alternatively, if you don't want to burn both feats you could look at changing to a Swordmage (arcane from the beginning, so you'd only need arcane familiar). Or you could change to a beastmaster ranger, and redefine the 'flavour' such that you're a fighter. In these last two cases you'd no longer have fighter powers, though.

More simply, the 'wondrous figurine' items (adventurer's vault and various dragon magazines) allow you to conjour a creature for 12 hours/day so from a magic item. Again, if you want to use the stats for, let's say, the dog, and say that it is actually a small snake, your DM shouldn't have a problem with that. IMHO though these figurines are almost broken-good, so your DM may wish to turn their power down a bit, or decide they aren't available in this particular game.

Yours,

JMH

Just buy one at a pet shop or something. Unless your trying to get a half troll war cow that spits acid who cares if you got a simple pet that you have as fluff or RP. Just tell your DM its not going to break the rules and there is no reason to shaft your chars abilities because you have a pet dog/snake/rat etc.

Heroes of the Feywild - Fey Beast Tamer theme
Dragon 399 - Animal master

I'd link to the compendium but it seems to be down for me.

fey beast tamer theme - tacks on a pet wtih combat stuff already built in.  You might not be allowed to add a theme after character creation.

Arcane Familiar - requires 2 feats (one to multiclass into an arcane class, and then the arcane familiar feat).  Your character loses no powers, and probably gains some nice utility (extra trained skill, familiar passive/active abilities, possible arcane at-will 1/encounter).  familiars also have all the rules statted up already for use in/out of combat.

Animal master theme - probably the most "pet" feel option out here.  These pets are NOT meant for combat.  You will most likely want to avoid using the theme abilities that put your pet in harm's way, but there are other theme utility powers that give a perception check to the pet (just an example).

Mount - if you aren't too picky about your pet, you could simply buy a mount of an appropriate level.  a mount without the "mount" keyword still functions fine in combat and gives you increased mobility and range/reach for attacks, but doesn't have any extra abilities.  Taking the mounted combat feat and getting a mount with the "mount" keyword will cost extra, but will give some extra combat utility as well (such as a warhorse giving you +5 damage on charge attacks).

Ask for a pet - Talk to your DM about getting a pet.  Be firm that you want a pet, but without using one of the above rules/mechanical ways to get a pet, the pet will be purely for roleplaying.  aka. it wont make any skill checks, it won't aid your intimidate checks, it won't help you forage your food, etc.  Feel free to perform inconsequential actions THROUGH the pet, but don't try to use it for any benefits/boons (for example, i once played an artificer with a variety of "inventions" i came up with on the fly that were purely roleplaying creations....such as a quill that was enchanted to write on its own - but only if i moved a free hand around and payed attention closely to it (as if i were doing the writing after all))
