If you are trying to keep it light and keep it simple then just use what you feel is appropriate. Bring out more and more options as you and your group get more acquainted with the game.
I'm sure this won't be your only game so there will be plenty of time for you and your group to open the entire can of worms.
I've been gaming for a long time and I've found it bad to throw someone into the deep end no matter if they are player or DM. Most people need to crawl before they can run so limit the options and work your way up.

Sounds like a solid plan to me. Don't worry about the non-Essential stuff and have fun!
4e D&D is not a "Tabletop MMO." It is not Massively Multiplayer, and is usually not played Online. Come up with better descriptions of your complaints, cuz this one means jack ****.

BOO.
I would not playin this campaign.
The essentials classes are (IMHO) poorly designed and boring.
Ahh, so THIS is where I can add a sig.
Remember: Killing an ancient God inside of a pyramid IS a Special Occasion, and thus, ladies should be dipping into their Special Occasions underwear drawer.

The point of the thread is learning the game, not getting the ideal campaign.

You're not a noob this game is targetting. If you actually know the game well, you should be allowed to play whatever.
Another day, another three or four entries to my Ignore List.
