The daily-swap tomes aren't actually all that brilliant. The choice of dailies contained in them is limited to specific keywords or elements, and most of them have mediocre properties that only work when attacking through the tome.

They don't really compete when compared with the likes of Staff of Sleep and Charm, Ruin, Cunning, elemental damage converters, Orb of Mental Dominion or Impenetrable Escape, etc. The best tomes are aimed at Summoners, which Mages aren't very good at being, due to lacking a school for those dailies.

You did catch that you don't need to attack through the Tome, just be proficient so you can use it's power?  So you can buy them at the lowest level for the Spells you want.

There's such a variety, I'd have thought that you could get pretty much any Daily in a Tome if you wanted, they cover most of the elemental keywords, plus Summoning and a few other specific Spells.

I was never suggesting that you actually cast through them as a Mage, just that it is actually useful to be proficient in them, for more versitility.

Controllers Tome off-hand will negate one encounter a day in the hands of an area attacker/blaster, they are extremely useful on top of the Spellbook features.

Controllers Tome is a minimum level 13 item, meaning it won't fall into the 'ridiculously cheap golfbag item' price range until a fairly high level, although yes, that is a decent daily power. And as for variety from the other tomes, there's one for the following list: Fire (two), Summoning, Force, Lightning, Cold, and Teleportation/Psychic. It's not really wide enough a range, especially for how few of those would be of benefit to a Mage.
A Beginners Primer to CharOp.
Archmage's Ascension - The Wizard's Handbook.
Let the Hammer Fall: Dwarf Warpriest/Tactical Warpriest/Indomitable Champion, a Defending Leader.
Requiem for Dissent: Cleric/Fighter/Paragon of Victory Melee Leader

I'll just keep my collection of offhand orbs, thanks. Especially the tome is going to touch the uncommon items limit.

Huh.  I thought there were more than that.  That's leaving out Poision, Acid, Necrotic, Radient, and Thunder, and maybe there's some non-elemental Fear and Charm powers out there.  That's still a good sized chunk of the Wizard list available in Tome form.

I see what you mean about them being little use to Mages though.  Worth a mention when you come to items?

One thing I've started to wonder: Why aren't themes in the same section as PPs/EDs. Don't they fill a similar role in Heroic? (nowhere near as powerful, granted)

And to stay on topic: Order Adept: Yay or nay for blaster wizards?

I forgot to list themes in the initial layout.

-edit- I was hoping to get through heroic powers today, but it's taking longer than planned, I'm somewhat exhausted and my latest book order from Amazon arrived, so I'm going to leave it there for the night. Level 1 powers are done, at least.

Speaking of books, may I recommend a pair of quotes for the opening post?

"Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger." -J. R. R. Tolkien.

"Tolkien had that mostly right. F*** subtle." -Harry Dresden, Wizard.

(If you want to add a little bit of color to the quotes, you can add 'On Control Wizards' for the Tolkien quote after his name, and 'Pyromancer' after Harry's. :P)
Mountain Cleave Rule: You can have any sort of fun, including broken, silly fun, so long as I get to have that fun too (e. g., if you can warp reality with your spells, I can cleave mountains with my blade).
