I am running and playing in a few games and am getting an iPad with my studant loans that come in soon. So I am wondering if there is an easy way to get a PDF version of my character sheet from the character builder. Are there any really good easy to use apps?
I also would like to know some good implemtation of the iPad in both playing and running a game? I am currently using an oversized laptop and it is killing my back and takes up a ton of room. Any suggestions?
My other question is how come Wizards does not make an official Insider app for the iPad? It would be perfect to include that with the insider subscription.

You can get a PDF version of the Character Builder sheet by using a program that prints to PDF. I use CutePDF for this, but there are many to choose from.
There is no "official" Wizards app, but iPlay4E uses Character Builder files(export them to your PC, then import them to iPlay4E's site) to make an interactive character sheet for your iPad that can reference DDI Compendium. It costs $4.99 but it kicks ass and is worth it. It tracks all your resources(HP, surges, powers, everything), rolls and adds your dice for you, and you can even run multiple characters on it at once. The only thing it doesn't handle are fiddly bits and conditional modifiers(you have to do those yourself), and it doesn't list your item powers in the powers section. I use it every time I play, and paper character sheets and dice(almost) are dead to me. It works well enough that I can resolve my turn faster using my iPad than I can using paper and dice.
I haven't found a good app for the DM side, but as I tend to run a character when I DM my iPad is busy, and even if I found one I'd never use it.
...whatever

no offense to TCO, but iplay4e is a free website that has a nice tablet and smartphone form. It does handle all of that stuff, and it can handle conditions (although it will not put in modifiers). If you export directly from DDI, it will actually have very complete information on your stuff. I personally have been using iplay4e for the last 2 years in a couple of games, both as player (for the sheet) and DM (to import into masterplan, which sadly is not ipad friendly). I strongly recommend it.
i4e (subtly different) is a $5 app that does most of this stuff, although it does not rol your dice spoecifically by design according to the app developer, as his experience is that computer rollers are not trusted.
I find that a good PDF reader, like adobe's, is a good thing to have, as well as a drop box account.
edit: My apologies. now that my itunes computer is rebooted, i see there is an "iplay4e live" app for $5. I'm not sure what the difference between this and accessing it online are. looks identical actually. However, it does appear to support offline character stuff. iplay4e, whether site or app, is pretty worthy in my mind. the guys there do good work.

The iplay4e app rolls dice. It runs nicer on the iPad than on the PC IMO, though your iPad has to be connected to the internet for it to be interactive(keep track of your HP, powers expended, ect.)

If you're too cheap to spend the $5 on one of the character sheet programs (like I am), print the sheet from the character builder as a PDF (I always print at a higher dpi in the settings as it makes it easier to view the small text), and use one of the free PDF annotation apps to view it (I use PDF notes). This way you can view the character sheet, and mark on it, thus making it easy to track hp, used powers and so on. For me it seems to work about as well or better than the paid apps.

I'm pretty confident that annotating a pdf is not nearly as good of an experience as one of the character sheet apps. Granted I have a bias but theres a reason I made i4e. Theres also a reason I'm continually tweaking it and have been continually tweaking it over the last 2 years. I'm always amazed that people balk at paying $5 for an app when they pay far more that for a source book or even dice. Not to mention the hundreds of dollars you spent on the devices that run the apps.

Unfortunately, I don't work on the android side of things so all I know is that its close and getting closer. Wish I could give more insight than that on it. i4e 3.2 for iOS should be submitted to the appstore this month it looks like, beta testing is progressing well. This release includes a lot of changes with how weapons/implements interact with powers and breakdowns of defenses taking into account what your character is wearing. It's getting a little smarter than it was.

If you're willing to drop $5 on apps, I reccomend a remote desktop like teamviewer or splashtop. They let you use the character builder and monster builder on an iPad anywhere you have wi-fi.
