It's not D&D without Justin Bieber.

Various game and movie soundtracks, mainly fantasy but sometimes not, as well as a smattering of instrumental and (when the occasion calls for it) metal music.  \m/ -_- \m/

Specifically, backround music for KotS that I'll be running will be "The Fallen Arises", and the last two battles will be "Blood Hunger Doctrine" and "Allegiance", all by Dimmu Borgir.

Vanador: OK. You ripped a gateway to Hell, killed half the town, and raised the dead as feral zombies. We're going to kill you. But it can go two ways. We want you to run as fast as you possibly can toward the south of the town to draw the Zombies to you, and right before they catch you, I'll put an arrow through your head to end it instantly. If you don't agree to do this, we'll tie you this building and let the Zombies rip you apart slowly.
Dimitry: God I love being Neutral.
4th edition is dead, long live 4th edition.
Salla: opinionated, but commonly right.

We actually used yackaty sax in our game once.  On minion was left and all he had to do is guess witch of the 6 portals went deeper into the complex toget off a warning.  While he guess wrong 8 times (portals shuffle with use) and the players roll 14 1s in row to hit.  Took them 3 rounds to kill one minion.

Normally we use death metal played queitly for atmospher in combat and jazz or classical when not.  The important point is making sure there is no voice or the voice is so distorted or in language we do not understand.  When there is voice players get distracted.  Pandora works great.

I used to play various soundtracks, but I let that fall by the wayside. There's a ton of movies I just can't watch anymore because I have their tracks memorized.

I definitely pump up the volume prior to the game though to get myself going. Soundgarden, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Pink Floyd, Pixies, U2, My Morning Jacket, The Doors, Pearl Jam... plenty of good pieces among those groups to get the blood going. The side effect is that by listening to those particular bands, I can pretend I'm better than everyone else in the world.
No amount of tips, tricks, or gimmicks will ever be better than simply talking directly to your fellow players to resolve your issues.

Yoga music.  It's airy, light and usually has exotic instruments.  Great for spelunking, dungeon exploration, etc.

AD&D is awesome.  Glad to see more people still having a blast with the best system out there.  If you don't know THAC0, you don't know D&D.

My group and I don't listen to music durring every game all of the time.  HOWEVER, we do tend to listen to pieces of a song when something happenes.  Power Metal is where it's at, as we'll play just the whisling part to the opening of Rammstein's Engel or the first 45 seconds of Rammstein's Reise Reise.  Particularly envision a cavalier or a fighter riding into battle on his warhorse in slow-bad ass-motion and spearing an orc to the ground with a war lance while the first 45 seconds of Reise Reise plays.  That's how our games go.  When not playing D&D but listening to music to inspire, my friends and I usually turn to Blind Guardian or Man o War.

Blind Guardian has a song dedicated to the characters in the Dragon Lance campaign setting and novels.  For this we'll listen to Blind Guardian's song called "The Soulforged".  My own Cavalier in a Pathfinder game had a theme song, and this was Blind Guardian's "The maiden and the Minstrel Knight."  Blind Guardian even has an entire album dedicated to The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.  We played "Valkyries" from Blind Guardian's album, At the Edge of Time when my Barbarian died.  I also had a Paladin who's theme was Bloodbound's "For the King".   And if you're feeling particularly nasty, make a Barbarian while listening to Man o War's album "Sons of Odin".

These theme songs don't come up untill after the character is made and had been played for a few games, but we never play the music durring the game itself.  it's more of a fun out of game thing we did at the time.

I use a lot from this Youtube channel. Sometimes I include songs with lyrics vaguely related to what the PC's are doing, for comedic effect.
Hey diddle diddle, the cat and the fiddle, the cow jumped over the moon.
The little dog laughed to see such sport,
And the Dish ran away with the Spoon.
He ran from conviction, and fed his addiction as the Dish heated the Spoon...
The Spoon begged to go, but the Dish shouted : "NO!!"
"The heroin will be ready soon!"

"Any time doing the right thing is funny as hell, it's probably Chaotic Good."
