My thoughts is that the bow is designed to launch a particular projectile, the Pellet when released will naturally strike the bow's body. In a bow the Arrow head remains in front of the bow itself, only the shaft is drawn back. With a pellet only this would be an unstable way of launching it.

That said, with a few changes, such as something on the string to hold the pellet, a board for the pelet to travel along, that keeps the pull from the strings even and that sends it in a straight line might work, but this quickly starts to resemble a crossbow.

Speaking of which, A large Crossbow would be a perfect weapon to be adapted to shooting pellets

As I read this, you're proposing a SLING (1d4, one-handed, can be dual-wielded but needs a hand free to load) that looks like a longbow (two-handed). Is that all you mean? Taking a longbow, using sling stats, and calling it a pellet bow?

If you want mechanical stats I'd start with short bow damage and lower it a die while changing the type to B.  I'd also reduce the range because an arrow's shaft and fletching should help if fly true where a stone wouldn't do as well.

Thinking practically I'll have to agree with MrCustomer's post.  Assuming your pellet bow holds the pellet in a pouch which is drawn back with the string you're going to have a big problem not hitting a straight bow.

In order to make it work you could certainly make a bent bow (which is almost like just making a very large, flat slingshot) and/or include guides.  But the real question is why someone make it, since it's probably more complicated and less effective than a regular bow, and you don't usually build that sort of thing unless you have a good reason for doing so.

Zauber's Mutable Rod: This rod has a number of useful functions that make it easier to live in the wilderness.  It is made of polished wood, with five studlike buttons on one end.  Each button produces a different effect when pressed.  Unless otherwise noted, the rod’s functions have no limit on the number of times they can be employed.
When button 1 is pressed, one end of the rod produces a small flame, equivalent to a candle.
When button 2 is pressed, the rod unfolds into a two-person tent, complete with bedrolls and warm blankets.
When button 3 is pressed, the rod becomes a one-handed hammer, suitable for pounding pitons into a wall.
When button 4 is pressed, the rod becomes a sturdy iron spade.
When button 5 is pressed, the rod becomes a wooden bucket able to hold 2 gallons of liquid.  Once per day, it can be commanded to fill with fresh water.
If the rod is seriously damaged or broken in any of its alternate forms (button 2, 3, 4, or 5), it reverts to its basic rod form and cannot be activated for 24 hours.
Moderate conjuration; CL 9th; Craft Rod, minor creation; Price 375 gp; Weight 2 lb.

It's based upon a weapon seen in a ripley's believe it or not cartoon,I suppose the string could be a little off when firing the pellet though.
Also it is a exotic weapon as well.

Dragon Magazine #349 has the prodd, a pellet crossbow. Doubt it helps, but it's a place to start.
