At wills Ardent Strike
The biggest thing you need to do to be a Defender, is get Marks, with punishments, as much as possible. Ardent Strike is a good start, but you really need more than that - you need to be able to throw Marks regularly.

at level 6 I think you can pick up a mass sanction power (call to challenge I think). Also many defender type dailies are cha based. Considering you want to defend going all in on cha might be a good idea. This would make you more accurate and would improve your daily powers that you would use to defend. Only issue would then be is that you will want to take something for your MBA because it would be weak (or make str your secondary and just accept the lower damage and accuracy).

Your best bet is Tiefling + Wrath of the Crimson Legion.

Not really. I'm playing that character, and it's not a strong off-defender. It would be way, way better if it could mark every turn. Two big-burst marks (Paladin's Wrath and Call of Challenge) with fairly weak punishments do not a Defender make.

I'd go Blackguard|Fighter - you take Come and Get It, Kirre's Roar, Call of Challenge, choose Dragonfear and take the Draconic Guardian feat. MC into Warden.
There's 5 encounter burst marks that then trigger Fighter mark punishment. As that's then an MBA and Virtuous Strike is a Paladin MBA, you get an upgraded punishment mechanic even if you lose Combat Superiority.

Hybrid is the correct answer. as mommy says, dragonborn with fighter will be a good combo. You will losd virtually nothing from blackguard, in fact you will gain a ton of flexibility in power selection. Fighter will give you some defender legitamacy coupled with top notch support. Its got everything you're looking for and it should be very functional.
