I couldn't find a thread on this after doing a quick search, but has anyone tried to give out special pieces of equipment that are not Omega Tech?

An example is finding a dead guard wearing a "One-size-fits-all Bullet Resistant Vest" and letting a character have it if they wish.  It could give a +1 AC bonus to ranged physical attacks (since the armor is thinner, but specially made for bullets).  I've been toying with the idea of having a few of these almost permanent, but less powerful Omega Tech items throughout the game in place of encounter rewards etc.  It'd be an in between level of Omega Tech and junk.

Thoughts?

In my campaign, I give my players' characters plenty of opportunities to find or build modern-style tech items.
If you feel like winging it, you can set an Easy/Moderate/Hard DC for a mechanics check to build something or a similar Perception check to find something among loot.  Compare the modern item to some of the stats for Gamma World equipment and make a fair guess how it would work in the game.

For instance, I let my party find some batteries.  I called them energy cells and said that a PC could spend use one to forgo an Omega Tech Charge check for a powered item, such as a laser pistol.

If you like more detailed rules so you don't have to eyeball stats et al, take a look at the following documents that I saved in my "4shared" account:
 - Money & Trade rules
 - Modern equipment reference document.

I heartily recommend Glimm's custom armors.

I just added a short new pdf file to my 4shared account.
I adapted the armor traits found in WOTC's posted excerpt from Mordenkainen's Magnificent Emporium.
The file is called "Armor and Shield Properties"
