Exactly, it makes no sense.

Speaking of things that were badly designed, please check out this thread for my Minotaur fix. What have the critics said, you ask?

Also, check out my recent GENASI variant! If you've ever wished that your Fire Genasi could actually set stuff on fire, your Water Genasi could actually swim, or your Wind Genasi could at least glide, then look no further.

Finally, check out my OPTIONS FOR EVERYONE article, an effort to give unique support to the races that WotC keeps forgetting about. Includes new racial feature options for the Changeling, Deva, Githzerai, Gnoll, Gnome, Goliath, Half-Orc, Kalashtar, Minotaur, Shadar-Kai, Thri-Kreen, Warforged and more!

I didn't think Pixies were supposed to make sense. Laughing

Well thanks to this month's Dragon, we now have a race that has more or less At-Will flight, climb speed, swim speed, or burrow speed.  I'm curious what everyone who has an issue with the Pixie thinks about the Hengeyokai?

1. The Hengeyokai can't attack while flying.
2. It's a Playtest article.

Another day, another three or four entries to my Ignore List.

Climb and swim aren't nearly as problematic because everybody can climb and swim.

I think:

"Man, I am completely not interested in that race, on a conceptual level.  Like, I don't mind the concept of a Pixie race, just the implementation.  But this thing?  Nope.  Just don't care.  I can't think of a 4e race that I care about less than this one.  Oh, no, wait, Wilden.  But at least the Hengeyokai are less 'OMG Mutant Fairy Plant-Creatures, That Actually Look Like You Squished Random Animals (not plants) Together' than the Wilden - so points there.  And, hey, they have some history - that's not exactly an automatic 'Plus' for it, but it means nobody sat down and thought the idea up just for a D&D book."

"Oh, also, I don't have ddi.  I... still don't really feel too bad about that.  I guess I should look around the net, to see if anyone will share the full racial stats, so I know what the hell all the ddi folks are talking about."

(Some stream-of-consciousness for ya.)

'Can't attack while flying,' like an altitude limit of 1, helps vs the most extreme flight abuse (hovering at a 'stand off' distance and hammering an enemy who can't respond).  It's not really any better or worse than needing to land at the end of the turn, or altitude 1, or any of the other sorts of limitations that kept flight apropriately limited when it became available towards paragon levels, in 4e, before.

Clearly the game is being re-balanced, or become less balanced, however you want to concieve it.  Flight is a common element in the genre.  It's problematic in terms of balance and playability, but those are lower priorities now, so it's in.  At 1st.  Given the pace of power inflation, fully-abuseable flight shouldn't be too long in coming...

And yet mearls example as to why item rarity was needed was so that not everyone wore boots of flying.

Now they just all play Pixies and Heng...whatevers and have flight from level 1.

Further Hengeyokai stream-of-thought (as I read comments elsewhere online):

"Crab?  Seriously.  Okay, that's enough to make me laugh.  Clearly these are more interesting than Wilden... oh, wait, I'd already established that.  Well then..."

"Aaaaand they are apparently completely unbalanced internally - some of the subraces (fly speed) are clearly superior to the others (climb speed).  Super.  It's good to know that WotC, like, knows what they're doing."

"Oh.  Oh wait."

It wasn't WotC that wrote and designed this. It was a submission.
