Have any announcements been made abut actual product coming up? You know, like books full of awesome character options? The stuff that people want to buy?
I think the product announcements are Saturday...
Not to join the bashing of 4E, but seriously how many more awesome character options are there? I mean I'm already reading complaints about the Kara Tur stuff by 4E fans as just be rehashed builds with oriental window dressing. Are we actually expecting the announcement of the PHB4?
Not trying to be negative, just wondering what else is there... this is part of what fuels the specualtion about a new edition.
There's hordes of themes they could throw out. If they can put out an entire book on one city in FR then they can do a lot more with their various campaigns as well. The way Mearls is talking about Modules, I expect there will be some new gameplay components for people to try out that bring in new elements to the game.
So 2 years of stuff and then they'll do 4.5e for reals, probably.

With the current slop state of 4th, I'd welcome an actual 4.5 release!

there are many economic types who believe, for example, that New Coke was intended to fail as a ploy to repopularize and rebrand "Classic Coke".
What? No. Nobody but conspiracy kooks believe this. The business decision to make New Coke is one of the most analyzed business decisions of the last 50 years. The only people who think it was a conspiracy are conspiracy theorists. The CEO who made the decision went to his grave insisting that he had made the right decision and New Coke was a great product improperly maligned. He lost his job because of that decision.

New Coke was pretty darned tasty, and in blind taste tests it beat the pants off of both Coca-cola Classic and Pepsi, its major competitor at the time.
Given the data he had, he did make a pretty good decision--the problem is that few people understood at the time that some people would drink raw sewage if it had a likeable brand name on it, and once they'd been doing so for a while, they'd be ready to tar and feather anyone that tried to hand them something so "foreign" as filtered drinking water, even if they'd directly asked for exactly that already.

It had nothing to do with the brand. What people didn't understand at the time was that taste tests do not accurately measure consumer preferences because the drink that people like better as a one-shot becomes insipid when drunk on a regular basis.
This is all explained in the Malcolm Gladwell book, Blink.

Very good book. I also recommend reading Outliers after you finish Blink.
Here are the PHB essentia, in my opinion: - Three Basic Rules (p 11)
- Power Types and Usage (p 54)
- Skills (p178-179)
- Feats (p 192)
- Rest and Recovery (p 263)
- All of Chapter 9 [Combat] (p 264-295)
A player needs to read the sections for building his or her character -- race, class, powers, feats, equipment, etc. But those are PC-specific. The above list is for everyone, regardless of the race or class or build or concept they are playing.

Don't be a soda grognard, wrecan.
While I certainly don't disagree that a one shot taste test is the best method for a food manufacturer to do anything other than get publicity, many of the people who complained about the branding switch and availability of New vs. Classic had never even tried New Coke. They just knew that someone said it didn't taste like it used to and the can looked all funny, and that was enough to fire up the torches and gather up the pitchforks. I KNOW I STOPPED BUYING COKE* BECAUSE IT WAS THE SAME AS ALWAYS AND SO IT SUCKED, BUT RAWR!!! THEY CHANGED IT, NOW IT SUCKS.
Personally, I thought New Coke was delicious, and I wish they still sold the stuff.
*yes, sales figures for coke were in decline at the time.

At this point, it would be best to shake up the cans prior to handing them over to be taste-tested.
Reflavoring: the change of flavor without changing any mechanical part of the game, no matter how small, in order to fit the mechanics to an otherwise unsupported concept. Retexturing: the change of flavor (with at most minor mechanical adaptations) in order to effortlessly create support for a concept without inventing anything new. Houseruling: the change, either minor or major, of the mechanics in order to better reflect a certain aspect of the game, including adapting the rules to fit an otherwise unsupported concept. Homebrewing: the complete invention of something new that fits within the system in order to reflect an unsupported concept.
Default module =/= Core mechanic.

I had a can of New Coke once. I almost threw up because it tasted so bad. I went back to the classic.
BTW, is there any chance of this tread getting back on topic????
