To keep a long story short, I am looking for a guide to where certain creatures are likely to be encountered.

For example:
Salt Zombies will likely be found in the salt flats.
Silt Horror's will most likely be found near silt.
Id Fiends can be found in Under-Tyr

Has anyone talked about this before? Or is there a guide I might be able to use to help me keep my encounters honest to the world?

You can also look at the old AD&D monster books. They have random encounter tables by geographical region, which you could adopt. Keep in mind the tables are far from perfect!

Dark Sun's Ashes of Athas Campaign is now available for home play (PM me with your e-mail to order the campaign adventures).

I use random creature tables for travelling encounters. One of the problems with this approach; is that if you include everything, there is the potential that the PC's will run into creatures that are to powerful for them to handle. The other is that they often run into creatures that pose no real threat. In order to get around this I also have a random encounter level chart that goes from 4 levels above and below the PC's current levels. If a creature is beyond their capabilities and the given xp budget then the encounter simply becomes a 'sighting'. That being, the PC's spot the creature from a great distance away and can avoid the creature. Now, if they decide that they want to attack the creature anyway (despite knowledge that it is not level appropriate and just mostly for flavor), that is no longer my problem, and I throw the completely innapropriate monster at them. After all, the game does have a mechanism for identifying threat levels of monsters.

From the information I have gathered from my DS:CS, I have compiled a list about 8 pages long, that includes, possible races and creatures found in 4e proper, as well as named NPCs in the area. A lot of interesting characters and even a couple of races that I didn't realize were in DS, such as Yuan-ti and Rakshasa. The Crystal Forest even has enough fluff that allows for players to be Shardminds. Even a couple of "dead" Sorcerer Kings/Queens that were taken out centuries earlier. And lastly seven headed hydra and goats.

Speaking of dead Sorcerer-kings, I find it 'realistic' that some will have been killed off in the thousands of years since the Cleansing Wars but on the other hand I feel like they're wasted plots. The only one I like dead is Kalak, but every other Sorcerer-king that was 'killed' still went on kicking:

Kalid-ma's soul was divided into five orbs. Dregoth returned as the undead. Sacha's and Wyan's heads went on talking.

What about Sielba, though? Can't her power persist some way? I haven't figured this out yet, I don't know if it'll be relevent for my current campaign but it's something I like to think about. Perhaps Hamanu's magic destroyed her city but left Sielba warped and twisted into some barely-sapient beast - almost a lesser version of the Dragon...less calculating, more savage

They never said that her body was found. She could have easily hid or been warped by Hamanu's power. Maybe she is in hidding or imprisoned in the ruins.

Also I did some data crunching and came up with a list on my own. Thought some people might like it.

There's a good possibility that Sielba's body was used to create the Dragonskin artifact (see Dragon #234 for the original version, or Legends of Athas for a 3e version) so you could use that item in some way as far as she is concerned.  The booty from Yaramuke went to Borys to help fund the construction of Ur Draxa as well, so you could use that as a hook too - maybe she has some kind of phylactery currently languishing in the Dragon's sanctum, for example.

Hey DontEatRawHagis,
I also read through all of The Prisim Pentad books and was able to pull out a few more (as of yet un-created) but mentioned animals/plants:
Animals/Birds:
Dusk Gull - Sharp Beaked flying seagul like birds (similar to seagulls but carnevours?)
Gorak - Knee High Lizards - herding typen (smiliar to chicken?)
Inixes - Horn Beaked Lizards used for hauling wagons and larger structures
Erdlus - small flightless birds with sharp beaks and large legs (similar to ostrages?)

Plants:
Ratang - Dried rootballs - shrubs
Faro Trees -
Arrow Weeds - Sharp razorlike ferns, cane-like
Gray/green tamarisk - (did not get explination but is near Pristime Tower in books)
Spindly cat claw trees (3rd book)
Bogo Trees - grow in tickets
Silver-green groomgrass (3rd book)

I even jotted down some geographical features such as rock types and such:

Minerals:
Basalt
Granite
Salt Flats
Silt
Sand/dunes
buttes
obsydian

If you can provide any help with this list i'd be greatly aprecaited! Also good luck in your search!
