Altair looked at the woman in his arms, and set her back on her feet.

"You make bold and brash statements, but you at least know that my so-called Children are as much a figment of this place as is the rest of it."

He took a step back.

"You claim to be my wife?  Prove it."

With a flash, a table, two chairs and a Rimple board appeared before them.  Altair sat in one of the chairs.

"I'm waiting."

For the first time, a glimmer of mischievous delight flickered in the depths of her mortal eyes. This was the man she had fallen in love with. She strode over and sat, diminutive across from the massive god.

"If I win, will you let me leave this place? Live out my life as a mortal?" she asked, and her voice shook, "If you win, I shall grant you that same honour."

She locked her wide blue eyes upon her husband, her one true love. She knew what the stakes were, she knew what she risked here. But she didn't care. Anything for one last game of Rimple.

"It is a game for the ages, then. Mortal against immortal. Good luck, my love."

She made her first move, sliding her piece easily across the board.

"Your move."

Altair slid a piece out of the Tower.

"Wait.  Those terms are foolish.  I have no desire to be a mortal.  If I win you will tell me what I wish to know.  Tell me where my wife truly is, and why she has put me through all this unending misery without her.  If you win... well, you won't win.  But if you do, very well, you can be mortal.  But I will win."

Vega studied the board for a moment before answering.

"What is it that you wish to know, my love?"

She spotted the right piece and stepped it deftly across to its new position.

"And trust me, I will win. The alternative would be death itself."

Altair barked out a laugh as he countered his "Wife's" move.

"Losing would be death?  Won't you die if you win?  You appear to have quite the death wish."

Altair
 grimaced.

"Very well.  I will play your game.  What I wish to know, quite simply, is Why.  And nothing so idiotic as 'because our children needed it.'  We didn't HAVE children, we had each other and we were happy.  Why hide and watch me be in such misery?  What was the purpose?  Was there a purpose?"

Vega gave a little laugh, and for a moment, she was beautiful. For a moment, it didn't matter that her hair didn't shine, that her body was small and frail. For a moment, she was laughing, like she did before, and for a moment, nothing else mattered. And then grief settled over her brow like a dark thing coming in to perch, and she was plain again. But perhaps even in the sorrow, there was a faint beauty.

"I'd hid in the Crook of Nowhere, along the Avenue of Somewhere, just past the River of Something in the District of Forever. It was a regular spot. What spots were there left unsearched? Who can say? Then was a space of forever, and no time. Limitless places, and none. I was too selfish, don't you see? I had you all to myself, and I need give nothing back. I'd had all I could ever want, because it was all there was to want. But the darkness hides many things, even from me. It could not go on forever because I saw that it didn't. In a world without limits, the easiest thing to spot is the end.

"You might scoff, but I saw what the darkness hid, what we were too blind to see. We were nearing the end of our chapter together. Soon we would become so perfect, the universe so complete, that our little house, do you remember our little cottage? It would cease to be, all the games of Rimple gone. You and I would both be lost, as days slipped into days, moments to moments all muddied, all faded. And so I gave you the greatest gift I could. Two in fact. I gave you life, and I gave you a child. No, not Vion or Vasa, I gave you this."

And she cast an arm about, as though indicating the world itself.

"I think it is a nice life. I shall enjoy it even more as a mortal. But you forget yourself. You are not paying attention. I did not hide. I never hid from you. If I had lived, if by some miracle I could have it all, nothing, not one thing in all existence could ever keep me from your side.

"And that's the truth."

Her nimble fingers found her piece and slid it into place. The first offensive was already forming.

"Your move."

As Swiftfoot entered the cave, he noticed that his light shone no more than the immediate right in front of him. All around him was darkness. Nothing pierced it. It wasn't magical, nor was it natural. More of a void than anything else. It was dark, yet he was still able to see the way in front of him.

As he approached the back of the cave, he saw what looked to be a hooded man sitting on a stone. As the man in the back, looked up at Swiftfoot, he saw dark eyes pierce him. He knew this man, yet he looked so different. So much....younger, stronger, and yet something sinister surrounded him.

"I see you got my message. Good. I take it you've come to return what is mine?"

The man got up from his stone and walked in front of Swiftfoot.

"I thank you for keeping the world from disorder, but I am afraid those plans have changed now. Although if you are willing to help you are more than happy to join me."

The first offensive crumbled under an easy counter as pieces went back and forth across the board for several long minutes.  Finally, the God spoke.

"But it was life without her, and a Child that stole its mother from me.  Those are no gifts, those are curses, for the one is not worth living, and the other only made me hate it.  You say that Vega gave me life, but even if it were all true, if as you say Vega saw something that would have brought an end to all things... it would have been a happy end instead of this damned unending LINGERING that I was consigned to."

He raised a hand to his face and pulled off his mask, revealing his scarred face beneath it.

"Was THIS what Vega wanted?  Tell me, for the scars you see here are as scratches to the wounds on my heart."

And so the Reaper, who was not sure that she should be called the Reaper anymore, but was certain that her original name was even more innapropriate, came into the Tower of Hril and soon met with her host.  She bowed, bones clacking against one another.

"I must admit that I am new here.  Why is this tower here in the middle of a storm?  And -"

A sudden whiff of Agnoth's essence wafted over her, and her demeanor shifted.  Had she had flesh, she would have sneered.

"Oh.  You're what passes for a "God", aren't you?  Just my luck."

This figure seems a bit strange...

"Were you expecting something... different, perhaps?" a slight smirk came across his face as he thought of all the different possiblities through his head. "I fancy the tumults of the storms-- it brings challenge to the minor beings that live in this flat plain of... well, boredom."

He thought for a moment. "What brings you all the way over here?"

The mortal woman quailed beneath his immortal fury. But she recovered quickly, her face flushed but determined.

"Would it have been happy?" she asked, quelling the rising emotion, "Was any of it happiness? Tell me, were you ever truly happy? What is life without the promise of new joy? What is love without those to share it with?"

She shook her hair out of her face and gazed boldly up at Altair. And as she spoke again, her fingers danced across the board.

"Do you remember anything from then? Really remember, mind. Here we sit, just as we did so long ago. Is this what you remember? We sit across from each other, our faces flushed and anger in our hearts. We fight so hard to win, the two of us, because we know that every victory, and every loss, is the end of life as we know it. So it was, and so it is now. You don't even recognize me. Does that make you happy?"

She pulled back her hand. The offensive had been a feint, drawing his pieces into a trap. She glared stonily over the board.
