Not only in D&D, but also in various computer fantasy games, I have a very strong tendency toward a two-blade power-mower who can also use a bow. Which in 4E means that I tend to play two-blade rangers, tempest fighters, and occasionally barbarians. (My last 3.5E character was a barbarian/cleric; he had only one sword and a bow.)

But I deliberately choose to not completely stay in that stereotype. I also recently played an archer warlord; and I was setting up to play a wizard but that game died for technical reasons.

"The world does not work the way you have been taught it does. We are not real as such; we exist within The Story. Unfortunately for you, you have inherited a condition from your mother known as Primary Protagonist Syndrome, which means The Story is interested in you. It will find you, and if you are not ready for the narrative strands it will throw at you..." - from Footloose

My favs in any D&D type game, including MMOs, tend to be archers of all stripes, though usually of the ranger variety, fighter/mages (bladesingers being one of my favorite 2e kits of all time), sorcerers, nature themed support/healers, and I recently discovered the psion/mind mage to my liking (to the point I am playing a similar class in EQ2 as well now).

Like warrl I sometimes stray just to do something different, which is how I discovered my newfound love for psions/mind mages. I played a barbarian in the last game I played in, and when that character was called away from the group by her tribe I played an assassin for a few session, and liked the flavor of that as well. Ultimately, if I can come up with an interesting story and concept for a character I find I can get into any class fairly easily, though I will never play an Infernal Warlock and I barely allow them in my games, and assassins have to be reflavored a bit. I'm sort of glad that Heroes of Shadow is E-style so I don't have to allow those classes into my game.

For races I tend to stick to elves, and other fey elf-like races (have a few home brew races in that direction actually) though the concept of a tough as nails dwarf fighter, warlord, or paladin has been appealing to me recently. I rarely if ever play humans, as I just don't see the appeal really, same with half-elves and anything that is considered a 'small' race.

And I really don't like tieflings, revenants, and the other 'dark' races, but that is coupled with my dislike of 'dark' classes. Just gives players an excuse to put 'Unaligned' on their sheet and play a total anti-social dbag and think they're 'cool' lone-wolf types like Batman or Raistlin and upset the party dynamic that is so important to D&D these days.

But that's me. YMMV.

I like options, I dislike Arcane classes, and I tend to like someone who can mix it up ranged/melee. Currently I'm playing a Seeker and I am very happy with my ability to ruin the day for our DM. I also played a Genasi Ranger/Warlord that was loads of fun. I tend toward Hybrids and MC because I like the idea of taking something previously unseen on the game board and making it run.

In video game form I tend to go for the stealthy guys, ie rangers/rogues who can kill without being seen.

Rogue has always been my favorite D&D archetype, but any class that can pull off the stealthy striker type is fine for me. This is why I want the Assassin fixed so bad. In 4e, Pursuit Avenger and AD Rogue are my favorite classes.

Form a fluff point I like swordmage, avenger and hexblade. From a playing point of view I like the slayer.

I like the fighter. That thin line between vulnerable people and monsters? That's me.

Defenders: We ARE the wall!

I've replaced the previous Edition Warring line in my sig with this one, because honestly, everybody needs to work together to make the D&D they like without trampling on somebody else's D&D.

(Dwarf) Fighter. Ever since they released the Mountain Dwarf in 2e that could start with a 19 Constitution (giving +5 on the hit points!) I have enjoyed playing dwarven fighters. I guess I relate far more to Gimli than to Legolas.
Here are the PHB essentia, in my opinion:
  • Three Basic Rules (p 11)
  • Power Types and Usage (p 54)
  • Skills (p178-179)
  • Feats (p 192)
  • Rest and Recovery (p 263)
  • All of Chapter 9 [Combat] (p 264-295)

A player needs to read the sections for building his or her character -- race, class, powers, feats, equipment, etc. But those are PC-specific. The above list is for everyone, regardless of the race or class or build or concept they are playing.

Same here, but instead of Slayer I prefer Rogue if I am gooing to play something. Either that or a Warlock|X just for fun. Avengers are nice as well.

I would say that I have a tie... but not quite an even one.

I love Human Slayer (fighter), because I love portraying the strong, stoic, deadly with a blade sort of character - especially wandering swordsman types.

I also love Eladrin and Wizard, but while I dig the mechanics for a Mage just as much as I do a Slayer, I only like the flavor part of Eladrin and don't really "feel" right about their mechanics. I most especially love to play the sage-like role that Wizards fit into quite well.

In non-4th edition version of the game, and in most other games where those two ideas hold true, Human & "Elf" and Fighter & Mage are equal favorites.
Careful, man.  That much logic might be illegal on the internet. - Salla
