Seriously, every round of layoffs, people make dire predictions. Including layoffs of important people.
It's the WotC/Hasbro revolving door. Nobody working there thinks they're immune.

Let's bring common sense in to the picture. If a game is at the top of the game you do not start letting people do who were the main designers. I mean there is no other explanation for it.
This really isn't how all businesses work.
Software testers in some areas, for example, even project leads, are often only temporary workers. They are laid off after one year to prevent them from costing the companies a bit more money, even if they lose a whole year's worth of experience with a program that way.
Common sense does NOT apply to the business world at all.

You do realize that Bill has been with the company for longer than a year.

You realize that was an illustrative example.
Removing employees who are close to a certain milestone in the company (nearing retirement, for example) is rather standard operation behavior for large companies.

Your example was comparing like for like. Bill was not a temp and he wasn't part of a software company. Bill was a long standing employee of the company that has been around for several editions of the game.
You don't get rid of a lead designer during a game that is supposedly on top of the world according to some people.

And how much personal experience do you have in such companies?
Do you have, perhaps, studies on the matter?

You have to understand something. We aren't talking about Joe Jones, a 15 year employee from the mailroom. We are talking about Bill Slavicsek who's name carries a lot of weight in the RPG industry. I am currently in university right for Software Development and we learn all about the corporate and sales part of the industry and I will tell you the Software industry is a whole different beast.
If you are going to use examples then please use something that has to do with each other.

You are making assumptions about what kind of "beast" the game publishing industry is without actually having been part of it. There really isn't anything directly comparable to the D&D branch of WotC, either. However, we can look to the general nature of business in this country and in the world and see numerous examples of how "common sense" is anything but.
As such, it is much more useful to wait until we have solid information rather to make assumptions. I'm sure that Bill, if he feels we should know (and Hasbro allows it) will give us an idea of what is actually going on.
Conjecture at this time is simply gossiping about our imaginations.
