I have spent a lot less, since I am not interested in the Essentials. I imagine if WotC goes back to the old style classes, I will buy a lot more again.
I have never seen a super nova go off, but if it is anything like a Chevy Nova it sure will light up the sky!

I have spent more this year just because I am coming back to the game after skipping out after 2nd edition. I have been buying all of the basics, some additional stuff since I DM, and also have been buying a bunch of Paizo products because I like the PFRPG too.
I would spend more with WOTC, but they don't have enough adventures published (Unlike Paizo) and do not support the campaign worlds enough (Dark Sun anyone?) Luckily, I still have a bunch of 2e Dark Sun stuff left over to bring into my campaign, but I would have a tough time playing Dark Sun in 4e with the scant amount of material/adventures/sourcebooks out for it from 4e.

Height of 3.5 > Release of 4e > A year into 4e > End of 3rd > Dawn of 3rd > 2 years into 4e > 3 years into 4e (I expect the trend to continue, although I haven't spent any money on DND since mid last year so it should probably turn into = signs. 0$ = 0$)

To answer my own question, my purchases have been declining. Less in the past year than in the year prior certainly.
Since 2004, I spent roughly $700 to $1200 a year on WotC related gaming materials, including DDM figures (3 sets at about $200 each set, magazines, books, maps, adventures, etc...) That spending was pretty constant between 2005 and 2009, with 2 trips to D&D XP bumping the amount spent up considerably in 2008 and 2009.
When 4E came out I bought all of the books, subscribed, and continued to buy minis, although my massive collection of the plasticrack did begin to limit the amount Iwas buying from $200 to less than $100 per set.
Through the first 2 years of 4E I probably spent ~$500 per set (excluding XP in 2009). However, after 2 years, with enough material in hand to run great games for many years, I essentially stopped buying anything D&D last summer. The only things I have bought since Summer 2010 are 4 figures in the secondary market, Gamma World' 3 boxes and a few single cards, a DM screen (because I do like the new one) and a Rules Compendium. That was less than $100.
D&D & Boardgames If I have everything I need to run great games for many years without repeating stuff, why do I need to buy anything right now?

definitely #2.
Yeah I bought all the essentials stuff, but I think I paid like $90 for the whole line. If even that.
But in aug 2010 alone I bought DSCG, DSCC, PsiPower, all from FLCG so that was about $100 just in that one day.
Before that, I bought the MP2 in...March 2010, and then I think beofre that I bought...the core books?
My Blog, mostly about D&D. I imagine that Majestic Moose plays a more "A team" type game than most of us. By that I mean he allows his players to make tanks out of a backyard playground set since the players have more "fun" that way.
Actually I much prefer The Losers.Spoiler:
Show
When I and my friends sit down we want a game of heroic fantasy. Rare is the moment when I have cried out in a video game or RPG "that's unrealistic." (Unless there is no jump button. Seriously makes me mad, single handedly ruined the N64 zelda series for me, but that's a digression of a digression.)
I mean, we play games with the force in galaxies far, far away, with supernatural horrors, dragons and demi-gods, alternate cosmologies, etc.
Reality and it's effects hold little sway to what makes a Heroic fantasy game fun IMO.
Just repeat after me:
You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You are not how much you've spent on WotC products. You are not whatever RPG you play. You are one of tens of thousands of people that spend money on a hobby. You will not always get what you want

when 4E came out I rushed out and bought the core three books... I loved it.
Over time WotC has WORKED to drive me away from the game. They metaphorically pried my fingers off the books over the course of 2.5 years. At this point in time my last purchase was PHBII, pretty much from now on I not only won't buy D&D I won't play D&D because of how I feel about WotC. The way they botched DDi, the way they treat their customer service, the problems with the website, the lack of communication, the reduction of quality and quantity in DDi and charging the same price. I just can't endorse that...

To not play D&D simply because you don't like WoTC is silly.
I mean, I'm pretty pissed because Chris Perkins didn't explain to me why he went along with DDM being cancelled. Peter Lee didn't call me back when I left him a message giving him my wisdom on how he's ruining D&D. And Mearlsy Baby, he needs to have a Roman Emperor Theodosius the First moment, by getting on his knees before the Bishop Ambrose, and start repenting his sins for ruining D&D.
Or- not. In the end, it's only life.

It isn't just that I don't like WotC. If it were that I'd bash them and you'd see a DDi icon under my name. Its because they have in the past and continue to drive the game into the ground. They are doing it intentionally and they plan to keep doing it. For instance if it were just Essentials, I'd hate on Essentials, but its everything in my signature plus anything I forgot to mention. Its the entire handling of D&D for the past 2 years pretty much... I just can't endorse that... Maybe when they remove their skulls from their pelvises then I'll take a look and see if its worth investing in again...

Since your purchase was already made on the products that you liked, why not just continue to use those products? Perhaps I just misunderstood, but not using something you already own seems more like punishment to yourself than WotC
