I always find these discussions about having systems elements banned confusing. If a good DM came to me, and said I'm using chainmail, or the 1977 boxed editions, I would ask when is the first session.
People should be more worried about a happy DM who feels confident about the material he is running rather than worrying about what is banned.
The opportunity to play is far more important to me than having every option available.
Arbitrarily banning things is usualy a sign of a bad DM.
How is the DM limiting material that he is not well versed in arbitrary?
It's not. You implied that the quality of the DM was more important than bannings, I countered that the two were often linked. I'm not saying banning things makes one a bad DM, but if a DM is all "I'm making a D&D game, core only, PSIONICS ARE BORKEN." I'd be a little wary (And more than a little tempted to make CoDzilla if this is 3.5).
It is also a lot of work for a DM to stay versed in all options being contantly churned out.
Which is a perfectly legitimate reason, although you really don't have to keep up with the new material, you just need to look at what your players are using. And if you can't read say 20 pages of text once, you probably don't have the time to play D&D, much less DM it. But whatevs, I can respect that (Depressing as it is to have my Pally get heavily outclassed by the sneaky fellow who bought the DM Martial Power for Christmas, but it's a collaborative game, so as long as they don't bitch at me about it, whatevs <img src="http://fast1.onesite.com/community.wizards.com/smileys/grin.gif"> ).
Following your logic, how do feel about dark sun? That limits or bans certain elements as a tenet of the setting.
I'm in lesbians with it. I mean, everyone's gonna play a Thr-Kreen, so banned races are irrelevant, and the book even suggests ways players can play banned elements with a minor reflavoring if they have their heart set on it, and the DM isn't overly tetchyabout it, so yeah ("Wanna be divine? Magic ancestors. BAM!").

Funny story: InQuest Magazine (I think it was InQuest) had an oversized Chaos Orb which I totally rooked someone into allowing into a (non-sanctioned) game. I had a proxy card that was a Mountain with "Chaos Orb" written on it. When I played it, my opponent cried foul:
Him: "WTF? a Proxy? no-one said anything about Proxies. Do you even own an actual Chaos Orb?" Me: "Yes, but I thought it would be better to use a Proxy." Him: "No way. If you're going to put a Chaos Orb in your deck you have to use your actual Chaos Orb." Me: "*Sigh*. Okay."
I pulled out this huge Chaos Orb and placed it on the table. He tried to cry foul again but everyone else said he insisted I use my actual Chaos Orb and that was my actual Chaos Orb. I used it, flipped it and wiped most of his board.
Unsurprisingly, that only worked once and only because everyone present thought it was hilarious.

no, see i can kill defenders, but 8 consecutive crits on a battlemind, eh walk it off.
Hi guys! So, I'm a sort of returning player to Magic. I say sort of because as a child I had two main TCG's I liked. Yu-Gi-Oh, and Pokemon. Some of my friends branched off in to Magic, and I bought two pre-made decks just to kind of fit in. Like I said, Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon were what I really knew how to play. I have a extensive knowledge of deck building in those two TCG's. However, as far as Magic is concerned, I only ever used those two pre made decks. I know how the game is played, and I know general things, but now I want to get in the game for real. I want to begin playing it as a regular. My question is, are all cards ever released from the time of the inception of this game until present day fair game in a deck? Or are there special rules? Are some cards forbidden or restricted? Thanks guys, and I will gladly accept ANY help lol.
I have the same problem with women.

And that's why you should never, ever call RP Jesus on being a troll, because then everyone else playing along gets outed, too, and the thread goes back to being boring.
See, this is why RPJesus should be in charge of the storyline. The novel line would never have been cancelled if he had been running the show. Specifically the Slobad and Geth's Head talkshow he just described.
Not only was that an obligatory joke, it was an on-topic post that still managed to be off-topic due to thread derailment. RP Jesus does it again folks.
It was wonderful. Us Johnnies had a field day. That Timmy with the Grizzly bears would actually have to think about swinging into your Mogg Fanatic , giving you time to set up your silly combo . Nowadays it's all DERPSWING! with thier blue jeans and their MP3 players and their EM EM OH AR PEE JEES and their "Dewmocracy" and their children's card games and their Jersey Shores and their Tattooed Tenaged Vampire Hunters from Beverly Hills
Seriously, that was amazing. I laughed my *ss off. Made my day, and I just woke up.
ArtVenn You're still one of my favorite people... just sayin'.
You... You... Evil something... I actualy made the damn char once I saw the poster...
Now you made me see it again and I gained resolve to put it into my campaign. Shell be high standing oficial of Cyrix order. Uterly mad and only slightly evil.
And it'll be bad. Evil even. And ill blame you and Lizard for it :P.

...Am I the only one that thinks this is reaching the point of downright Kafkaesque insanity?
I condone the use of the word Kafkaesque. However, I'm presentely ambivalent. I mean, that can't be serious, right? We're April 1st, right? They didn't mod RPJesus for off-topic discussion when the WHOLE THREAD IS OFF-TOPIC, right?
Save or die. If you disagree with this, you're wrong (Not because of any points or arguements that have been made, but I just rolled a d20 for you and got a 1, so you lose).
HOW DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THE BEAR PRODUCING WORDS OF WILDING?! WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?!
That's what RPJesus tends to do. That's why I don't think he's a real person, but some Magic Card Archive Server sort of machine, that is programmed to react to other posters' comments with obscure cards that do in fact exist, but somehow missed by even the most experienced Magic players.
And then come up with strange combos with said cards. All of that is impossible for a normal human to do given the amount of time he does it and how often he does it.
He/It got me with Light of Sanction , which prompted me to go to RQ&A to try and find if it was even possible to do combat damage to a creature I control (in light that Mark of Asylum exists).
Blue players get all the overpowerered cards like JTMS. I think it's time that wizards gave something to people who remember what magic is really about: creatures.
Initially yes, Wizards was married to blue. However, about a decade ago they had a nasty divorce, and a few years after that they began courting the attention of Green. Then in Worldwake they had a nasty affair with their ex, but as of Innistrad , things seem to have gotten back on track, and Wizards has even proposed .
You are my favorite. Yes you. And moments like this make it so. Thank you RPJesus for just being you.
I have love hate relationships with some classes and features in 4e.
My main thing is banning Alignment, just because I feel its unnecessary. In my 3.5 campaign I have a Lawful Neutral character, and am worried I will go to Chaotic, which I am told limits my abilities for the class I chose.
As far as classes go I recommend trying to move out of your comfort zone. Instead of a ranger I promote the use of Seeker, I would also say that there are other healers besides Cleric.
I dislike Gensai Swordmages right now, mainly due to three people that always play as them. And recommend players against it.
In my first D&D campaign however I did allow a Paladin and a Swordmage, but the players did overpower their abilities.

Oh **** yes. Anybody who says monks can't be chaotic hasn't played Godhand.

I personally allow anything with the caveat that classes need to be in book form but just a print out of a specific power/feat is fine, this way if an issue comes up at the table it is a bit easier for me to adjudicate.
That said, I wouldn't mind if one of my players brought a 4e pun pun to the table, they could probably use the help
In my just-ended campaign I banned essentials, mostly because we were already at 17th level when it came out, with less than a year to play, and had decided on sticking with the download CB. In my next campaign, I'm basically going to allow anything from CB, but require character sheets periodically. Also, if anyone brings in a character above 1st level I'll place restrictions on magic items.
I will, however, aggressively ban races and classes if I'm running a short-term, particularly flavored game. For example, I could see running a short-term Arthurian game, where everyone would play a human (maybe allowing one half-elf), and I would limit the character classes to a handful.
I can also see myself working with the players to self-limit based on setting.
i have problems with, and occasionally need to ban, things that are so overpowered in one aspect that they ruin a portion of play.
For example: Genasi wizard with the feat to allow strength to elemental powers + winged horde + enlarge spell + energy admixture: thunder (winged horde) + resounding thunder. Throw on multiclass sorceror and a helping of dual implement expertise and here's what you've got
a character that can at-will carpet bomb a 7x7 square for d6+int+str+str+enhancement+OH enhancement-2
lets put this character at, oh, level 15 with a level 17 (staff of ruin)and a level 11 implement (magic staff) (22 str and int) thats d6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 4 + 4 + 3 - 2 or d6 + 27....in a 7x7 area, which doesn't hit allies....every turn
that doesn't count various paragon path bonuses, other feat bonuses to damage, the absurd accuracy the character can have with the spells, or the various encounter and daily spells he has access to (not like he needs them)
THESE are the kind of things i struggle to avoid in my game. If this character exists, any fight which doesn't include at least 2 elites or a solo, or attack from a HUGELY spread out position will be a complete pushover.
minions are right out, and a huge set of tools for creating a meaningful and worthwhile game disappear.
other things i strongly consider restricting include frostcheese abuse abusive charge builds conditions lockdown builds (largely fixed now) permanent invisibility (lock/rogue hybrids)
similarly, i can understand the viewpoint of your dm not wanting to allow material he hasn't seen or doesn't have access to.
i haven't had a chance to look over heroes of shadow yet, and as such, i asked if my players could please avoid using it for our most recent campaign (characters built last week, being played this week). Once i get a chance to flip through it and understand a bit about it, i'll be much more understanding.
i suggest picking the powers/feats you want, go over WHY you want them and HOW you plan on using them, and then present all of that to your DM. You may find him much more receptive if you're up front about why and what you're doing and what impact it will have.
I ban Dragon because not everyone has access to it and I don't feel like reading it. I have also banned the three 'Heroes of' books for our new campaign, no one has them in our group so that is a non issue. The only thing banned from PHB 1-3 is the Shardmind because I find it to be absolutly rediculous. All that said, I allow everyone to petition a single thing that they want in.
