Huh. Well, that's a lot sooner then I expected, course it's also not the version they were hoping for. I'm not sure how I feel about that aspect. Part of me understands doing this is way easier and cheaper then the 3D version they wanted. Part of me that wanted to use this, wanted to use it because of the 3D version.
My actual table top game is alot more visually exciting, I think. Still I could imagine that if I put this on my TV, and everyone brought their lap top, it would be fun to see how it works and changes the game. We could certainly all just sit around in a relaxed manner.
We'll see.
But, it's going to need the other tools we've been waiting for. So here's my questions:
Will these tools be able to be usable (Eventually or at start) to help me with my game if I'm not running it in the VTT? Can I use the map maker, and then export a decent version of the map I made?
Will I be able to customize monsters? And for that matter, what's going to happen to the Monster Builder? Is that going to go into the tools for this?
Seriously, what's going to happen to all the other tools we were told were going to happen? Has the change in direction mean that you've decided not to put out tools that can be used unless it's going to be part of the VT?

3-Trade: WTB Beta VT Link Access 2-Guild: Hey man they put VTT online in 4E! 2-Guild: Looping says': What is the ventrilo server or teamspeak info for the 4e game? 2-Guild: Zorax says'!' 2-Guild: What tool are u useing atm? maptool? or the beta one? 2-Guild: Zorax: Neh, do Vt need DDI access for every player... 3-Trade: ECTO for sale!
guess what i was playing...
I find it hilarious that a guild paying subscription fees on WoW would complain about every member needing a DDI account to use the VT. S'like - your friends don't get to play for free because you have a key buddy...

They will have to integrate all the tools, maybe not all in the beta, but by the time it's all said and done they will have it. 2d? 3d? I'm just happy they came out with something NEW, not remankes of the same tools.
As for export functionality.......... That's a really good question(and definitely very useful), I guess we'll just have to wait and see......
WoTC has shafted us a couple of times in the past, it has never been pretty, but I hope the fact that they are doing a BETA for the first time in a while isn't lost in all those past failures....
BTW: I think I just saw a unicorn walk across my computer screen......The VT is really coming!

Also, It seems like this ties in very nice with the new direction they took with the new box sets of rules and accessories, namely the new tokens. Personally I've always wondered why they never came out with tokens a long time ago. Sure they had the minis but I think more people would be able to afford the tokens over minis.
But...having gotten the Monster Vault, I can honestly say, I'm not crazy about all the tokens. It's great they kept the production cost down by using existing art, however, not all the art translates well into the one inch circles.
Also, minions are simply marked Minion. Eh. I don't like to signal which are minions.
So...we shall see.

So this new tool is good for people who play with friends around the world. But I, like most people, prefer DnD to be a social and personal event. Otherwise I'd play WoW. And I know that this tool sounds useful to a conventional tabletop game anyway, but here's the thing: 1. Incompatible with the current tools, meaning the CB and MB aren't usable in accordance with it? Masterplan lets me do that as a DM, and it saves so much time. (Of course, those 'current tools' will soon be defunct now that the new web ones are up.) 2. Online access required. This is a big one for me. I don't always play at wifi hotspots, and most of the places I do play have really slow internet access if any at all. Masterplan lets me play offline. 3. With the amount of bugs in the new CB, can we be assured that this tool will work? Hopefully, since it's being beta tested, but that brings me to 4. Closed and invite only beta, with no announcement as to the final release date. How is this incentive for people not to cancel? I've tried the new CB, and rather then get super angry and cancel my subscription or post a bunch on the forums, I took the lazy option and simply stopped using it. I just opened my old CB. I'm probably just going to keep my old CB and follow the Dragon articles for updates pertaining to my preferred classes. In spite of this, I can see where everyone is coming from, as it's very frustrating to pay for a product you don't even want to use. And this Virtual Tabletop, once it actually arrives, is something I probably won't use for my campaign. I'll probably stick with Masterplan. It's a solid, compatible, homebrewable, offline program that makes DMing so much simpler. And, as a bonus, it's free. Why can't we have something like that for our DDi money?

This might be an incidental gripe, but you know what? So many whiners on these forums, I'm going to complain about something that isn't a big deal: I think Virtual Table is a stupid name. The omission of "top" is a bad decision, and I think the product would be improved by it's reintroduction. This sounds like a parody of other whiners griping, but I'm serious: I don't like it, but am otherwise satisfied with everything else, so I'm putting my $0.02 in about what I would like to see changed. In addition to the fact we've been "tabletop roleplaying" for decades, and it was previously announced as the "virtual tabletop," this random-ass rename to "Virtual Table" doesn't make sense to me, it doesn't fit in with the culture. Plus, Virtual Tabletop rolls off the tongue better. Personally, I'm going to continue calling it the VTT/Virtual Tabletop. Just as, when Notch announced Hell was rename to the Nether in Minecraft, I refused to call it anything but Hell. "VTT" works better, and I think Wizards should rescind their stupid rename ASAP. Call me a stickler for old names, but I am an English major after all

I'd like to throw in that I'm looking forward to the VT. Right now, even though most of the games my group and I play are in person, we still all have laptops and and run combat through maptools. This is to speed up combat setup, and because none of us own any minis. I would love to run games with the kind of stuff I see slyflourish setup, but I don't have the time or the money or the space to put all of that stuff. So I setup all the maps digitally, and create all the tokens and setup ahead of time. Then everyone can take control of their tokens stuff. I also use it in play by post games to give a better table top feel to the combat.
Can't wait to try this thing out, and I hope I get to beta test it.
