Since this seems to be the more "official" VTT thread... Is this the tool that Paolo was actually referring to originally as the awesome tool that "supplements" the existing tools?
Reflavoring: the change of flavor without changing any mechanical part of the game, no matter how small, in order to fit the mechanics to an otherwise unsupported concept. Retexturing: the change of flavor (with at most minor mechanical adaptations) in order to effortlessly create support for a concept without inventing anything new. Houseruling: the change, either minor or major, of the mechanics in order to better reflect a certain aspect of the game, including adapting the rules to fit an otherwise unsupported concept. Homebrewing: the complete invention of something new that fits within the system in order to reflect an unsupported concept.
Default module =/= Core mechanic.

While I have no idea about Paolo, this is what WolfStar76 and I were all excited about a couple of weeks/months ago. (and, for the record, we have known that this was in the works for much longer).

I have never really been interested in a VTT. If I wanted to play a computer game, I would. If I wanted to catch up with mates and play a role playing game - I see very little need for a VTT.
Add to that there are already a number of fully functional alternatives out there, even if I wanted one.
Instead they divert resources away from fixing one product that isn't working properly to offer another that no doubt will be as half-done as their existing one.
Try fixing one before embarking on another.

If we had known this a couple of weeks/months ago, it still would've been bad when it was announced, but I don't think the online CB would have gotten lit up on the boards like it did.....
With all do respect Mudbunny.......you really SUCK for not telling us! (I know you couldn't, but you guys still suck....)

It would be nice to know. There were a lot of people beyond harsh with him. Being upset with Wizards as a company is one thing. To call a man a liar, that is quite another.
I am not trying to stir up trouble on that front, but that whole "event" really bothered me at how he was being treated.

I am sure we could have told you, but then, we wouldn't be in the beta and thus, when it opens, be able to provide pretty screenshots, answer questions and test things out.

Of the two approaches to hobby games today, one is best defined as the realism-simulation school and the other as the game school. AD&D is assuredly an adherent of the latter school. It does not stress any realism (in the author's opinon an absurd effort at best considering the topic!).
It does little to attempt to simulate anything either. (AD&D) is first and foremost a game for the fun and enjoyment of those who seek the use of imagination and creativity....
In all cases, however, the reader should understand that AD&D is designed to be an amusing and diverting pastime, something which an fill a few hours or consume endless days, as the participants desire, but in no case something to be taken too seriously.
For fun, excitement and captivating fantasy, AD&D is unsurpassed. As a realistic simulation of things from the realm of make-believe or even as a reflection of midieval or ancient warfare or culture or society, it can be deemed only a dismal failure. Readers who seek the later must search elsewhere. - Gary Gygax. 1e DMG.

When this goes live and there is CB and MB integration, I will happily buy a year's sub.

Many congrats to WotC for announcing this and building momentum and beginning to rebuild trust/belief. While the dev manager in me winces at splitting the core skill base of a team (Java and .Net), I also recognise some benefits. Personally I've used maptools for a long while now. However, I don't use any framework rulesets. I don't want my D&D game reduced to button clicking. I use maptools (and intend to use the VT) merely as a device for bringing seprated people together, not to change the fundamental D&D experience. Players need to know and understand their characters, make choices. DMs should take time to understand their players characters and so on. If I want to abstract the rules out of the roleplay, I play different games Keep forging ahead guys. I'll keep bitching about things I think you're doing wrong, but credit where its due. And hey, don't forget to pick me for the beta!
