What happens when I use the program on a computer I don't have admin rights to, and doesn't have a PDF printer? How do I send a PDF of my character?
[sarcasm]Oh there's nothing to worry about, since you wouldn't be able to install silverlight without admin rights anyway... See no problem there![/sarcasm]

When I said 'using the program' that implied that silverlight was already installed on this hypothetical computer I recognise the sarcasm, but I feel this is an issue. I have silverlight installed on this computer, because ITV Player (UK TV channel's on-demand service) uses it. I didn't need a PDF printer until I got the old CB, because all other instance where I've neeed to make a PDF of something on this computer, the program has the capacity built in. I wouldn;t be surprised if that is true in many other cases. Particularly given that, IIRC, silverlight is supplied as an automatic update to windows, whereas PDF printers are not. Meh.

The CB does not only need silverlight. You also need the CB client.

i dont have admin rights here and silver light is not installed, but with portable ff and some tricks you can get silverlight running.

While technically correct, once you have Silverlight installed you don't need any kind of privileges to launch the CB, it's just like visiting a web page.

Some places have all sort of things locked down, including NTFS permissions on file systems. While most places I would assume not, you cannot just count on being able to run it from some random computer.
Just like everything else, you should not expect to be able to use this at some walkup computer at some random store. While chances are good that you will be able to, some of us in IT know better than to keep a public computer that opened.
And that is assuming that the site is opened to begin with
That is all I am saying.

Are you suggesting that WotC should program for a situation in which a machine has a browser plugin installed but does not have permissions to run Internet content in that plugin?
some of us in IT know better than to keep a public computer that opened.
Someone that locks down a computer to the point where it's not useful for the intended purpose (surfing the Internet) is not a very good IT person.

A public computer is not your computer.
Running a silverlight or a flash application is not browsing the internet. Both can (and do) get blocked sometimes, for various reasons.
And no, I am not suggesting that is it something they need to worry about. But on the other hand, you can't just assume that any computer you walk up to in an internet cafe or elsewhere (as some people are claiming) is going to be able to run the application without a problem, much less have access to the wizards site to begin with. There are plenty of open wifi networks that I have been on that still lock down sites - even though they are opened and free to the public.

Of course the same is true of the CBC.

Will there be some sort of demo or trial of the new Character Builder for non-DDI subscribers? I would like to be able to play around with it before deciding if I want to spend the money and subscribe.
