Do we have any definition on what an Essentials character is in WotC terms?

If I make a quick essentials character can I expect to ONLY see races, classes, feats, powers and what not that has been released in an Essentials book (or magazine)?

Basically I'm confused on why it doesn't jsut say make a quick character.

This is what I'm assuming.  YMMV

That's what it looks like.  In the video they create an Essentials character, choose striker and the only visible options are Fighter (Slayer) and Rogue.  Similarly, the races visible for selection were only those available in the first Essentials book.

I haven't gone through all the posts in this thread and don't intend to so I apologize if this has been asked already.

Can you create completely random characters with one click, or do you have to do each section randomly?

Looks pretty sweet btw. Good job!

I was looking for some new features but then I realized this was just a  video of someone going through the character-building process so I  skipped ahead. It looks like the "new" character builder does most of what the old one does. I guess the only new feature is that I can't edit my  character if I don't have internet access.

On the plus side I now only have one reason to run Windows on my Mac (Adventure Tools of course!).

Wizards, I'm really hopeful for you here, make this the best Character Builder ever!

cheers,
Meshon

Thanks Trevor and Chris for the video. Looks great overall. Just the sheets which are missing crucial infos but this will be taken care of sooner or later i guess....I hope so. (Try and find Bahamut on the Invioker's character sheet for fun  Tongue out!)

When Chris was randomly naming the Invoker at 4:30ish, i was hoping for him to SET PORTRAIT to see if it could select a portrait from the CB only, or from any other sources but he went by next....I asked before but doesn't know if we will be able to...

Very cool eTool,
Hey Big Thumbs Up to the Studio and all it's employees.  Keep up the hard work guys ! Cool

The Power and Feat selection process seemed like a huge step down. In Classic, you have your power options that you can choose as well as what powers you have already chosen on the same screen, but in this version they separate it so one screen is chosen powers and the other is what you want to choose. Same thing with the feats. Looked annoying to navigate.

I also noticed that when the quick essentials character was made, he could only choose a very limited amount of races. I wonder if that is intended.

Probably only the races described in the Heroes of... Essentials books so far.  That is after all why they are Essentials characters.

Am I really the only one wanting to use my own images for my characters?

4.) Don't make a PDF export—that's what print to PDF is for, but the character sheet preview looks pretty bad.

Wut?

No, seriously.  The whole point of this thing is that you can use it on any mac or PC (that has internet and silverlight).  If you have to download and install a PDF printer to get a PDF version, that invalidates the the purpose of it being a web-only program.  PDF export is a must, if only to demonstrate their willingness to go the whole way.

I say this because it's already built into Mac OS for years, and it's probably built into Windows Vista or Windows 7 (I hope). Done right it could be viewed as HTML and be printable out-of-the-box.

I'm saying that since most people have or can get a free PDF printer anyway, focus your effort on something else.

As far as I know, there is not a PDF printer built into Vista or Windows 7 (though MS Office 2010 finally included a save as PDF ability).  It's still pretty easy to get a free PDF printer though.  Now you know Wink.  I'm still with you though, I'd rather have an export that would allow me to re-import (.dnd4e) than a integrated PDF export.  That's not to say integrated PDF export wouldn't be nice, it's just not particularly necessary.

So that begs the question - "What's more important to you?"

  • Export: .d&d4e (XML) format
  • Export: PDF format
  • Any of the hundreds of other features that have been requested here.

I guess for me, PDF doesn't even hit the radar.  I can't think of a single feature request I've seen here that I wouldn't want to come before PDF.

Since I already have a .pdf creator built into my web-browser, I would say .XML/.d&d4e format, except that I've already moved on.

RCanine: like I said, I don't disagree that PDF (or some other form of electronic format readable to non-ddi subscribers, HTML would be fine, heck, i'd take .png) is low on the priority list.  It's something that is easily gotten around in any number of ways.  But for a web-based program even more than a downloadable, for a program that should work on ANY computer, whether or not it's set up the way you want it to be, any functionality that is needed from the important stuff to the tiny stuff, should be built in.

What happens when I use the program on a computer I don't have admin rights to, and doesn't have a PDF printer?  How do I send a PDF of my character?

It's a small issue.  I make no bones about that.  But it's one which bugs me, because I feel it's symptomatic of the overall poor planning and execution of what COULD have been a high-quality program.
