If you'd like a suggestion, why not just have the DM reduce every monster's defense numbers by one?  That achieves the same effect as giving everyone Expertise.

That's ... sorta a work around.  It was much easier for me (the guy who's already doing most of the work) to just tell them to take the feat for free, and then use the monsters I wanted straight.  I can also tell people "You've got a basic melee attack off your prime stat", but it was a LOT more accurate for them to take the melee-training feat, and let the builder work out the details.

"Nice assumptions. Completely wrong assumptions, but by jove if being incorrect stopped people from making idiotic statements, we wouldn't have modern internet subculture." Kerrus

Practical gameplay runs by neither RAW or RAI, but rather "A Compromise Between The Gist Of The Rule As I Recall Getting The Impression Of It That One Time I Read It And What Jerry Says He Remembers, Whatever, We'll Look It Up Later If Any Of Us Still Give A Damn." Erachima

Unless they're a level 16 monster, then take it off by 2, unless of course the party is only level 14, then you still only take off 1... unless they're using the NEW essentials expertise in which case you're back to 2.

I think my point is clear.

this does fa to combat piracy, now its easier for people to share accounts bc there is no update limit. my dm in a game i play in announced it to the group last night like this. 'now everybody can get on and make their pcs!' everyone was excited to take advantage of the new 'anti-piracy' software

smart move. Easy Fix: If anybody logs in, his old session becomes invalid. Have fun.

You are overcomplicating it, slightly.  The bonuses are based on character level, not monster level.  And Essentials has nothing to do with it at all.

Assuming your party is all the same level, use the following:

Party Level ... Monster Defense Penalty
1-14 ... -1
15-24 ... -2
24-30 ... -3

If you are catering to a split-level party... well, you shot yourself in the foot from the beginning.

Not quite so easy.  What if I want to log in from my desktop for the forums, my cell phone for the compendium, and my laptop for the character builder?  You've now screwed me over, even though I haven't done anything wrong.

But isn't that what this change is all about? Screwing over those of us who did it RIGHT in order to bar those who were doing it WRONG (piracy)???

That would be the only thing which would inevitably cause my group to stop subscribing to DDI altogether. It would completely remove the current level of utility we have and not provide enough benefit to warrent the cost.

Well and again, a "smart" person caused the trouble. If people would just stop doing "smart" things live would be so much less ... inconvenient
