Gaming for me about having a fun RP experience, not theorycrafting my chars.

I enjoy both.

guides Show
my builds Show

F-111 Interdictor Long (200+ squares) distance ally teleporter.  With some warlord stuff.  Broken in a plot way, not a power way.
Thought Switch   Higher level build that grants upto 14 attacks on turn 1.  If your allies play along, it's broken.
Elven Critters Crit op with crit generation.  5 of these will end anything.  Broken.
King Fisher Does an excellent job at keeping an enemy disabled in a few ways.  Strong.
Boominator Fun catch-22 booming blade build with either strong or completely broken damage depending on your reading.
Very Distracting Warlock Lot's of dazing and major penalties to hit.  Overpowered.
Pocket Protector Pixie Stealth Knight. Maximizing the defender's aura by being in an ally's/enemy's square.
Yakuza NinjIntimiAdin: Perma-stealth Striker that offers a little protection for ally's, and can intimidate bloodied enemies. Very Strong.
Chargeburgler with cheese Ranged attacks at the end of a charge along with perma-stealth. Solid, could be overpowered if tweaked.
Void Defender Defends giving a penalty to hit anyone but him, then removing himself from play. Can get somewhat broken in epic.
Scry and Die Attacking from around corners, while staying hidden. Moderate to broken, depending on the situation.
Skimisher Fly in, attack, and fly away. Also prevents enemies from coming close. Moderate to Broken depending on the enemy, but shouldn't make the game un-fun, as the rest of your team is at risk, and you have enough weaknesses.
Indestructible Simply won't die, even if you sleep though combat.
Sir Robin (Bravely Charge Away) He automatically slows and pushes an enemy (5 squares), while charging away. Hard to rate it's power level, since it's terrain dependent.
Death's Gatekeeper A fun twist on a healic, making your party "unkillable". Overpowered to Broken, but shouldn't actually make the game un-fun, just TPK proof.
Death's Gatekeeper mk2, (Stealth Edition) Make your party "unkillable", and you hidden, while doing solid damage. Stronger then the above, but also easier for a DM to shut down. Broken, until your DM get's enough of it.
Domination and Death Dominate everything then kill them quickly. Only works @ 30, but is broken multiple ways.
Battlemind Mc Prone-Daze Protecting your allies by keeping enemies away. Quite powerful.
The Retaliator Getting hit deals more damage to the enemy then you receive yourself, and you can take plenty of hits. Heavy item dependency, Broken.
Dead Kobold Transit Teleports 98 squares a turn, and can bring someone along for the ride. Not fully built, so i can't judge the power
Psilent Guardian Protect your allies, while being invisible. Overpowered, possibly broken
Unnamed Avenger|Runepriest/Hammer of Vengance Do lot's of damage while boosting your teams. Strong to slightly overpowered.
Charedent BarrageA charging ardent. Fine in a normal team, overpowered if there are 2 together, and easily broken in teams of 5.
Super Knight A tough, sticky, high damage knight. Strong.
Super Duper Knight Basically the same as super knight, only far more broken.
Mora, the unkillable avenger Solid damage, while being neigh indestuctable. Overpowered, but not broken.
Swordburst Maximus At-Will Close Burst 3 that slide and prones.  Protects allies with off actions. Strong, possibly over powered with the right party.

This is crazy,  I have 6 chars on my builder right now.  The one I play and the ones I made as pre-gens for a game I run.

When a character dies and I know he isn't coming back I delete it.  I also don't have crap in my basement or in my garage.  My vehicle is clean and I only have cloths that I wear/fit me in my closet.

I am starting a hoarders show for RPG's.  I will come to your house with a film crew and we will go over the books you have and the games you "really play" and then we will sift through your charaters.

It will sound like this;

"Really, you need the Al Qadim box set.  You still have a hankering to play a Barber character...  Oh its a collectors item, I see.  Well I know it has value to your local gaming store because the guy has a rack of this crap that hasn't sold an item in years.  I am doing my Christmas episode at his store."

I see you have 23 barbarians in you character files.  Were you aware you make the same feat and at-will choices 83% of the time?  The names seem to change but the build lives on..."

I don't have 20 characters either - but I am not assuming that other people don't.  Just becuase you don't doesn't mean that other people don't.  Stop assuming everyone plays the same as you do.

20 character limit is stupid.  And their "reasons" for this are as well.

Wow.  Is it fun to de-value the fact that some people have been playing  for many years and don't feel like parting with their collection?  I  don't normally respond to trolls, but I will in this one instance just  to ask what you think people SHOULD do with their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd  edition books?  On second thought, never mind.  I don't actually care what you think about it.

Hahah it was just a joke.  I thought it was funny...  That would be a great show.  So don't de-value my innovative enterprises.

I just don't think that the majority of people really have more than 20 characters in their builders because they need thatmany.  I think they have them because they simply never bothered to get rid of the ones they never used/look at/ or care for.

I also think its lame to put such a small bandwith tether on folks in this day and age.  Its so much cheaper for my workplaced to buy more storage than it is for them to create and implement an email storage policy and then spend man hourse enforcing it and man hours actually deleting things that its funny.

We are all gamer hoarders, I just think its funny we have nobody to to call us on it.

btw (where do think I got the spelling for Al Qadim?  Off the box on the shelf right beside me.  The box that has been unopened for almost 12 years.  Until tonight.

First... I still have my origional white box. I've played D&D longer than most of you have been alive. I have every iteration of the game, and still have all my books and box sets. I keep every one of them around for the same reason. Ideas. Almost every book has an adea in it. be it a plot point, magic item, monster, etc. But theres always something I can grab and make into something new for my campaign.

We are not hoarders, the 20 chatacter limit is nothing but a vehicle for the future. WotC's vehicle to squeeze more money out of their dwindling customer base. It will be their first micro transaction. Extra character slots for extra money. There is no answer to why there is a 20 character limit. and no reason for there to be a limit so low.

Unfortunately, because they are running Silverlight in a browser the character builder won't be able to directly access your hard drive (much like Java web apps, Silverlight runs in a sandbox and is restricted from doing certain things on your computer). The export/import stuff is going to be the only way they can do it.

If it is going to have export capability (albeit not at launch), it has to be able to write to the hard drive.  An export is really no different than "Save as..." in the long run.

This type of statement is what makes me think they are shooting for a graphically intensive character builder.  Not unlike an MMO, where you can choose not just the feats and class, but also what your character looks like in 3D.  Think about something like the City of Heroes character creation, and it makes a lot more sense if we are talking about 20 characters.

Or...they could just be completely arbitrary.

Yeah actual 3D models take up almost no space. Its the textures that take up massive amounts of space, and they would obviously be shared or even a one time download to the client.

I'm sure there is a plan to increase the maximum number of characters that can be stored. The way I imagine it goes along the following lines:

Nov - Character Builder is online with 20 slots

Dec/ Jan - while a lot of subscribers actually cancelled their subscription, the majority still uses the service and comes to like the tool

Feb - some new features/ additions will make a lot of people happy and the online CB will become an invaluable tool for gamers

Mar - WotC offers a new subscription for a small fee increase: "D&D Insider Premium" that let gamers store up to 50 characters

This is how I see it:

  • Dec / Jan - The character builder is either late "soon" or it arrives on time with hundreds of bugs that make it nearly impossible to use.
  • Feb - They fix 50% of the bugs, but introduce another 50 bugs in the update (from new content or whatnot).
  • Mar - WotC offers another "perk" that does nothing for 75% of subscribers and increases the fee (which is already way beyond the initial offering).

I shouldn't do this, but I want to help you guys out there to understand.

I could write a script in about 10 minutes that automates the new Character Builder and then creates a new level 20 character. I could run this on a number of machines (10? 20?) and let it go overnight creating, say, one character every 10 seconds.

Math quiz: after how many hours will I fill 1TB of space? 10TB? 40TB?

Twenty characters seems incredibly low, and I would tend to agree, but we can monitor average usage and ramp it up as needed. We just have to protect ourselves (and the service you depend on) from DDOS and other types of attacks.

I know you can't answer this, but what's to stop the same person from putting something into that script that deletes a character, and creates a new one thus tying up your bandwidth all the time.
