Thanks Paolo. More I read about all this it makes me think Hasbro has no idea what damage they are causing by forcing WOTC to be silent on DDi. I think Hasbro thinks the DnD brand is a line of toys and not a tabletop RPG, totally different things.

I actually think you are not far off (much as it might pain me to say so) I think they view DnD as a type of board game.

One of my housemates last year thought of D&D as a computer game.

Yes, you read that right.

She was of the belief that a game was either a computer game or a board game and that D&D had more in common with computer games. The idea that games were more diverse than this did not seem to make sense to her.

That or she was intentionally trying to annoy me.

Just my opinion of course.

Well the one thing we all need to realize is that the information is power.  I want the info just as much as anyone else here.  I am sure that PaoloM and all the other people want to give us that info just as bad.

But let's look at it from the other side,  WotC provides us all the information that we want.  That news spreads throughout the internet, some investor picks up on that and makes a decision to invest in Hasbro stock.  Yes it's not going to be more than a drop in the bucket of Hasbro's bottom line, but the SEC and the Feds really don't care.  Fines ensue, and we are right back to knowing nothing.

Another example,  PaoloM (or anybody at Wizards for that matter) gives us the information that we want, but since they aren't permitted to do so, they lose their job.  We may be happy here on these boards because we know something, but i don't think that is going to cause us to give money to support the person and their family that lost their job in the process.

In the end, the benefit of providing us with information on something that is a hobby, is not worth the risk of losing one's livelihood.

They are working towards changing the ways in which they communicate, but that does take time.  In my own personal experience, I've seen changes that are a simple as changing the letterhead that a company communication  is printed on take up to 3 months.  It all depends on the priority that is placed on the issue as it goes up the chain.

I really appreciate the efforts being put forth, and hope to hear something at a date sometime in the near future (didn't say s**n) .

Ramius

And before another round of speculations, etc....

What I meant by "financially damaging information" was in the context of stuff like insider trading or company secrets being leaked. I did not mean to infer that there are troubles around here...

(cue the new round of speculations )

Usually I don't post, I am a consumer that specializes in if I am not happy I wont support the product.

Coming from a publicly traded company I understand the requirements of information classification. Most companies have 4 levels of classifications for their information.

Public: News Release, everyone can read it
Non-Restricted Internal: Information can freely be passed internally, but can not be shared externally
Restricted Internal: Restricted information, less employees have access to this.
Confidential: Company trade secrets, could damage the company if it got out..

The information PaoloM has for us is more then likely Restricted Internal as of now, if not Confidential. Most companies have nice policies that state if you spread that information you can lose your job.

While I am not happy with the delay in the CB update for Dark Sun, I am understanding on the limitations of the silence that they are placed with.

Interesting and illuminating. Thanks for sharing that.

So members of WOTC officially recognise a problem with communication and are working to fix it.
There are changes afoot in DDi, and these have caused the existing product to deteriorate. (Less frequent incomplete delayed updates).

a) could not this have been anticipated and something put in place before hand to tell the customers what was happening? It must have been obvious something had to give. There's still no dark sun in the CB, these are two months late already. Surely that was anticipated in some way, the very least that could have been done would be to start then on a press release stating why and what we could expect. Clearly this wasn't done as two months later theres still no official explanation.

b) Why does WOTC have a veritable gagging order on D&D information, where as virtually all of the magic team feeds us information daily?
This clearly isn't a company policy, from either hasbro, or WOTC or Magic would be gagged too. Maro tweets daily about design decisions, upcoming cards, he writes a weekly column, one of about 8 on the site, other designers, developers, etc do the same. He just puts it up there. Openly, candidly, on the fly, answers questions instantly while he's online. He doesn't even have to run it past a PR team first.

D&D can't even tell us why the books they released two months ago still aren't in the CB, they can't even put out an approved press release in two months (it's over that since the first delay was announced).

Finally and most importantly:

c) How long do wizards expect people to put up with a gutting of a subscription product down to it's bare bones with no explanation? There is virtually no excuse for not being able to get a statement out in two months.

Sorry to fire all of this at Paulo, but there's noone else listening, let alone responding.

This is a question that irks me as well. When other companies' employees are allowed to talk about future products it is easy to shrug and say "well, another company, another set of rules", but when different departments in one company have different rules then something is odd.

I know this type of thing is changing my spending habits and the habits of my 6 person gaming group.  I can't imagine the kind of things they have been producing lately are going to bring in enough new players make up for the 1,000's that are leaving;  one more editions war and Dnd may be bust.

I'm just getting incredibly annoyed with the situation to the point of letting DDI run out after the month. PaoloM isn't the person I want to vent at, but he's like the only one who actually talks to us, making it tempting before I shut that urge down.

Heck, pretty much every person at the tabletop RPG club at my College is canceling DDI just out of sheer cost/benefit reasons.
