My current situation makes it so that I and my crew of would-be PCs can't play d&d as normal since we have no location.

I'd like to see if playing 4th edition online might be an option through some third party software, and if so how I can go about organizing it, learning more about it, and so on and so forth.

I use a very, very good software program called Fantasy Grounds 2.  It has abundant 4E D&D support and a lot of people who are already running games in it.  It's not free ($24 for a players' software, $40 for DM's version, plus bundles, etc.), but it lasts a lifetime, through version upgrades, etc., and it has made virtual tabletop gaming a beautiful thing, indeed.  In many ways, with combat tracking, effects automation, etc., it's even easier than pen-n-paper play (if not quite as fun as being all together in the same room).

Worth checking out, at least, in my opinion.  Hopefully others will give you different options to consider as well.

Wow, Frothsof... that's quite an impressive list you gave.  I think everyone can use that info.

Looks pretty good. How's the 4E integration coming on it?  FG2 attracted me because it had built in 4E (3E, too, for that matter) character sheets, power tabs, effect trackers, effect effects (IE: If you get dazed, it will automatically grant CA, automatically handles ongoing damage, the effects of blind, etc), and so forth.

I'm all for supporting all these companies that are doing their best to give us what we all want (a virtual tabletop that WotC originally promised).

I was going to say Google Wave could be useful, but it doesn't have the support that the other suggested sites have. Wish I could help, sorry.
