AH_Anarchy, I printed out a set of yopur nice looking cards and realized a significant problem with them. I have a Cannon MP600 series printer (not cheap) but the white letters do not show well on such a busy background. You might want to lightened the background and/or change the print to black letters instead of white.

The card back looks nice, but I put my cards in a card sleeve protector. That way they can tap their origin encounter powers, like their alpha and omega cads. This allows the DM a quick and easy way to check the power left available to the group in case you want to do a running fight and really test their abilities.
Flag AH_Anarchy October 21, 2010 9:33 AM PDT
CrazyKobold, I wouldn't suggest printing these on an inkjet. Printers are very inconsistent, especially when it comes to color. You are just not going to be able to match the vibrancy and color of a color laser with an inkjet. I took the pdf to Staples and it was well worth the $5 to print there. The text is very readable on the color laser output.

Did you ever finish your cards?
Flag ExcalibursZone October 21, 2010 9:53 AM PDT
In this same vein, AH_Anarchy, do you think having a card for the origin itself, not just the powers would be cool as well? I'm tempted to deconstruct your cards and generate the actual origins as well (perhaps using the blue background one)...That would set this set as the de facto origin card set for me...

I'd echo this - I've got a really high-end inkjet, and a test print came out pretty passably. Another test on a lower-end one came out looking like dirt. So I will be doing the same as Anarchy - I think $5-$10 for a set of these at a professional printers will be well worth the money. Might even spring for the cardstock if its not too expensive, we'll see.

Mmm. I didn't ask for any special paper, so I think they used 22-30lb. I cut the cards out and shoved them in front of some spare CCG commons in sleeves. No back.

The PDFs are linked in post #19 (thanks ExcalibursZone for the link!)

You can take them to an office supply store or Kinko's to get them printed on a color laser, then you cut them out and sleeve them.

Or you can edit them in Photoshop or GIMP and make them individual images. Then upload to a place like Artscow and have them make you a custom deck of playing cards. You'll want a card back, like one that was posted earlier.

I would say: We don't. That way WotC won't get upset with us. Afterall, if we went and designed better cards and then started sharing them, why would people buy the boosters from WotC? I'd rather see new material come out instead of losing the line because they can't support it.

Yep. Gave them a flash drive and had them print it on whatever was in the tray (22-30lb). Was about $4 per set. I had some City of Heroes CCG cards, with a nice black border. Cut the GW cards, used a CCG card for stiffness and placed in a sleeve. About 1 hour work to get the set ready to play.

Picked up my GW box set over the weekend and am hoping to have my first chance to run it tonight, but I was immediately dissatisfied with the provided character sheets. They are far too small, do not have nearly enough space for skills and gear, and the colors, well, eww! Foot in mouth  I really have to wonder if anyone at WotC actually tried playing a game with those things before they were approved and printed?

That being said, thank all of you for your efforts to provide a better solution!

AH_Anarchy's cards look freaking sweet, but it sounds like they don't do very well on inkjets, and I won't have time to get to a professional printer before game time. That being the case, I decided to try a combination of Oraibi's simple and elegant character sheets with Battles' origin half-sheets. It seems like those should cover everything the players need to know and track very well.

You guys are awesome, and I am looking foward to my first GW game much more now that I have some decent tools to make character management easier. Cool

Is this the extent of the fluff for each origin? I was looking to create handouts for players (assuming my playtest of this on Saturday goes well) to give my players that has all the fluff they need (I was considering using Anarchy's cards so repeating the novice, utility and expert info wouldn't be necessary. Although if that's all the fluff available on each origin I may just hand those out to my players and e-mail them Anarchy's awesome cards).

Ideally my players will spend $0 on Gamma World (I'll be running DM decks only as a house-rule. Given some of the players I'll be playing with, building their own deck would only cause them to spend a lot of time pouring over all the options and trying to build the optimal and perfect deck. From what I've seen that would defeat the whole purpose of Gamma World. Character creation should take 10-15 mins MAX and if people are spending hours trying to build perfect decks, then that's a lot longer then the 10-15 mins). So if I can get all the rules into the players hands easily then that will make me very happy. I've been going through the excerpts and previews to jot down as many of the rules as I can find. My "Player's Guide to Gamma World" is currently 5 pages long. 1 cover page, 2 pages for setting fluff (with one of those pages being a "Map of the Known World") and then 2 pages of mechanics I've discovered so far.

No. Most origins also have an "Appearance" entry that gives some hints as to what your character would look like. In the end, I had to leave them off to save space.

Good call: In a system where a Seismic/Yeti could very well end up being declared as "Bobo the Dancing Bear" any sort of set appearance entry is really kind of silly.

Flag Oraibi November 9, 2010 8:47 PM PST
... I played a Yeti / Gravity Controller named Bobo the Circus Bear. He juggled (ranged weapons), rolled around on a ball, wore a fez, and carried the door of his cage to hit people with.

He was an homage to Shelly Mazzanoble's Oso de la Fez.

If what you are asking is information on what each origin is about, looks like, or functions, then the answer is more or less "Yes, that is all." There IS an appearance entry, but all that really is is a general suggestion on what you probably look like. Gamma World is extremely fluff-light, and actively encourages players to make up things in terms of how their characters look and function.

As an example, to paraphrase a number of sidebars, origins like Rat Swarm could be interpreted in the following ways:

1. A swarm of tiny humanoid mutated rats, each armed with thier own armor/weapons.
2. A writhing mass of rodents crammed into a humanoid shape.
3. As #1, but could be say, cats, or birds, or anything else related to your other origin.
4. As #2, but again related to your other origin.

Thus, an Android Rat Swarm could be:
1. A swarm of robotic rats armed with micro lasers.
2. A mass of robot rats that transform Voltron-style into a single humanoid.
3. Replicators from Stargate, or something similar as a nanite.
4. A single giant robot rat that can fragment into smaller pieces.

Really, theres no need to include fluff for your players - let them make it up!

Thanks I've been talking to one of my players about the possibility of some Gamma World adventures (I want to play it myself first to see whether or not I like it, but based on what I've read I think its just the ticket for me). One of the things he mentioned was he didn't even know what some of the origins looked like. Thanks for the kind comments. I traded for Famine in Far-Go and will be working on the new origin cards very soon.

The backs are here:

www.zeroradiusgames.com/BGG_files/gw_pow...

This is a good thread with links to most everything:

rpggeek.com/thread/575196/power-cards

One link missing from that thread is a blank template file:

In theory it's possible to release fillable cards, but I've never done it.

Just create a PDF with form elements... though that would be limiting in text, you'd have your fillable cards...

That's fantastic.  Really, your cards are the best thing I've seen for Gamma World yet.  They are so incredibly helpful during the game.  I'm surprised WotC hasn't offered you a job yet.

AH_Anarchy, love your cards. Looking forward to the Famine ones. I printed out 2 sets and placed them in black card sleeves, then I hand out whatever cards go with each players origins.

They lay them out with their Alpha's (which I have in Green card sleeves). Omega Tech are in Purple sleeves.

AH Anarchy, I love your cards and would love to get a set of Famine in Fargo ones! Awesome.

I agree, Anarchy. I'm excited to see your FiFG origin cards. What a great help during a game.

Thanks to ExcalibursZone and privateer4hire (BGG) for major help. Please let me know if you find any errors or typos. Once these pass muster, I'll do the B&W versions, but it's a pain to maintain multiple versions, so I don't want to make those until these are certified as good. Cheers!

You are a god at this!

Maybe WotC should sit up and take notice of the talent out here when it comes to producing material for games!

Either way, looking forward to seeing the Origin Cards for Famine when completed.

I know you've heard it before ... but ... thx!

I think all Gamma World characters should be told, at some point in their lives, something that starts with "You might be an unsightly gooey lump..."

I agree though insulting the simian will not do wonders, unless you rolled a simian and a gelatinous in which case that would be correct

There has been no eratta for GW, as yet.  I can only assume that it's a mistake, though, otherwise it's absurd, there's just not reason for it (the Yeti's, at least, being encounter, as well as minor, made a little sense).

I have decided to rule that all Novice powers are standard-action, at-wills, period.  Just think it works better that way.

I'm pretty sure they answer questions by flipping a coin.  Either that or they get bored and give you off-the-wall answers to amuse themselves...

...well, or people make up CS responses to post on the forum...

Hey i love the origin and power cards!!! is anyone working on the Legion of Golds new origins and powers? Or maybe even the vocations!? Wishful thinking but i'd love to see monster cards sometime as well! Those would prolly have to be put on oversize cards though! Keep up the great work guys!
Flag Wulv February 10, 2011 7:28 AM PST
Hey Anarchy i was lookin through your cards last night and noticed a little error on Wheeled, in the flavor text you use "you" in a spot it doesnt really belong so it sounds wierd when you read it i'm not at my pc so i cant give you the exact line, but i think it is on the trait card. It isnt a big deal but i figured i would let you know. Thanks a TON for all your hard work. The cards are awesome they help me and my players keep track of when they use one during an encounter so we cant possibly use it twice i have them either twist the card sideways or flip it over.

Anarchy, you are amazing - as before, I LOVE these cards.

I was wondering if you were going to release a set in the 3-color (green, purple, blue) color scheme that you had for the original origins set?  I find it much easier to visually distinguish my cards that way, and I'm hoping to pull together a set of the new origins to match my original set so I can just mix them all in

Also... have I mentioned that you are a ROCK star and that I wish I was half as talented in Illustrator as you are?

Flag voodoodolly March 4, 2011 7:27 AM PST
Realy, I have to thank you!

this is the best thing going! I run a game at my FLGS, and for chacter creation I cut out all the cards and placed the powers behind the origins in individual plastic sleaves. Then I shuffeld them and had the players draw randomly...

It works great, all the players are individuals since there is no chance of two characters having the same origin, and it moves things along fast.

I hope you do the legion box on day, but even if you dont, thanks!

Were the LoG cards ever created?  My 12 year old son is running the Gamma World game for myself and his twin 8 year old brothers and they are loving it.  The power cards really make things a lot easier for them to see what they have as powers and what they can still do (just flip over the Encounter power card when you use it).  I have printed off the original box set and the FiF cards already and was hoping the last box set will get the same awesome treatment.  Play aids like these make gaming so much easier and fun for the kids!

Your cards are formatted great and really fit Gamma World, but I'd love to just run off page from my inkjet whenever the need arises.

Thanks!

Black and White? Ehhh. I did a quick test and removed all the background textures, changed the text color to black. They're pretty plain, but should print without trouble on home printers.
