Fantastic idea. Possibly suitable for a Gamma World Wiki contribution? I'll submit anchor (tethered by chain, or not) as a heavy 2-handed ranged weapon. LaCrosse stick is amazing.

Yup. The fun part is that almost anything can be a weapon and a shield, depending on how you hold it.
Shields can include
Manhole covers Garbage can lids Stock pot lid End tables Fridge/freezer doors Washer/dryer doors Cabinet doors Hubcaps Wooden chessboard Planks

Another thing to keep in mind is dual wielding -- if someone wants to use a pair of katanas or something, just count it as a two-handed weapon. If they lose one of the weapons, it drops to the stats for a one-handed weapon.
ETA:
This is also how you go John Woo with a pair of pistols.

Good call there. I can't even begin to count the number of times I've had to facepalm when people feel the need to ask about dual weilding weapons (in any game system).

For those who want to translate GUNS into GW stats.
LIGHT 1 HANDED GUN Most handguns and revolvers. 9mm, .38 special, Glock
LIGHT 2 HANDED GUN Assault Rifle (M-16) Submachine Gun (Uzi) Small/Light hunting rifle (.223) Precision Sniper Rifle (H&K PSG1)
HEAVY 1 HANDED GUN Heavy handgun or revolver Any magnum, Colt .45, Desert Eagle
HEAVY 2 HANDED GUN Heavy Assault Rifle (AK-47) Light Belt-Fed Machinegun Shotguns Large Hunting Rifle (30-06, .303) Powerful Sniper Rifle (Barret Model 82)
And I do like the rule that using paired weapons simply counts as a 2-handed weapon of the relevant type.

This weekend I'll try and post the list of make-shift weapons I had developed for my own conversion of D&D 4E to Gamma World before I learned that there was to be a 7th edition of GW. You might get a few good ideas for the list.
