If you recall, that was functionally the old interface.  After you did the search, the various types of things you could be searching for had numbers beside them for numbers of hits.

The new interface just hides the tab buttons in the dropdown.

Right. And, functionally (or as far as the telling me how many hits I had in each category part), I liked the old interface much better since I could see at a glance where my search was going. I was just suggesting that the same immediate feedback could be obtained in a way that still fit the look of the compendium and required less going back and looking again to see where I got my hits (I'm arguing, basically, that hiding that information in a drop-down is not good). I really like this look over the old one, so I'm not saying "return it to its prior form, posthaste."

There are lots of ways to arrange it; this particular way just says to me "Nice, but needs work." But that is just my take on it, of course.

So yesterday was my first session with the new compendium, and I have to say I'm very, very disappointed at how poorly it runs on an ipad.  For something accessed through a web browser, the text for the search results shouldn't be cut off with no horizontal scrollbar.  The first part of each word in each line is chopped, and results continue down beyond the page and can't be accessed.

Very disappointed - one of my major reasons for having DDI and *not* being mad about the updates is that I have it primarily for the Compendium and for at-a-glance referencing while playing.  Now I can't do that nearly as conveniently, and that makes me an unhappy customer.

Doesn't seem to be that much more extra clicking, honestly. After all, you can simply type in the name of what you are looking for if you are so inclined.

I want to find the stats for the Greatspear.
Old

  1. Click on the search box.
  2. Type "greatspear" and hit enter.  Look at the list of monsters.
  3. Click on Items
  4. Click on greatspear.

New
  1. Click in the search box
  2. Type "Greatspear" and hit enter.  Look at the list of monsters.
  3. Go back to the dropdown, and open it
  4. Click on "items"
  5. Click on Greatspear.

25% more clicking.  And you have to go "backwards" in the workflow.

Edit: I actually like the look of the new one.  I just think they need to fix the workflow slightly by showing monsters next to items in the initial search results.  But if you don't understand why others don't like it, you're not thinking critically.

Excelent analysis Kilpatds.  I bolded and italicized one line where I believe there is an extra step in the old process.

If I recall correctly, you simply had to type what you wanted to search for, then click the Items headder, without hitting enter.  That means you never needed a second hand or your first hand never had to leave the mouse.

I find long drop downs to be inelegant and time consuming, especially on a mobile device.

You could.  You can now too, of course.  (remember, the old headers are still there, they just live in the dropdown now).  But if you have a keyboard, you had to use it to type the query, so hitting enter is basically free at that point.  The only reason you wouldn't is if you knew it wouldn't go to the right place, and it took too long to come up with the initial set of results.

Practical gameplay runs by neither RAW or RAI, but rather "A Compromise Between The Gist Of The Rule As I Recall Getting The Impression Of It That One Time I Read It And What Jerry Says He Remembers, Whatever, We'll Look It Up Later If Any Of Us Still Give A Damn." Erachima
