So when someone at WOTC says to wait "a couple more days" we hapless customers are supposed to know that WOTC means 7 days?
Please be sure to apologize for everything that WOTC does...since they never bother.

I took a look at the Terms of Service and the Character Builder information on the main site. I can't find anywhere a promise of 'monthly updates'. They are welcomed, of course, but that's not what I am paying for. I am paying for the magazine content. I am paying for access to the current versions of the Character Builder and Compendium and Monster Builder.
I am NOT paying for the promise that eventually it will be worth my while. If at some point I notice that what passes for 'current version of the tools' no longer meets my expectations and is no longer worth the money, then I will stop subscribing. As for September, I didn't pay for anything (and neither did anyone else who got a refund) so as far as I am concerned, they don't owe me anything.
I understand that some people feel that they are paying for a service, and I can see why they would be disappointed. Personally, I am paying for a product, and I am getting what I am paying for.

Nonetheless, the character builder and the failure to update it has caused a serious hiccup in the lack of support for Dark Sun. The inconsistency between the crazy awesome marketing they did for Dark Sun and the lack of Character Builder Support(which has become a cornerstone in most gaming groups that I've spoken to that play 4ed) is disconcerting and disappointing. Not to mention the huge push for the Essentials stuff and then it not being included in this update as well. I have players that don't know the game well enough to really build a character without the builder and I am unable to allow access to Dark Sun Races, Classes, and Weapons without the builder. It's just bad business sense and poor consistency. Here's hoping the web tools actually matter. It seems to be that it's more likely that the character builder is becoming a web based tool so they can better control subscription cancelling and resubscribing every so often. This lack of updating is causing stagnation in new content. Mainly this is most likely a planned obsolescence strategy that works so well for a number of large companies(The Axis of Evil(MS, Apple, Google)). I haven't read anything about the new web tools...so this is all conjecture. I could be dead wrong. Just my two cents and a little forum flaming/venting.

Weird. I received the broadcast under my messages in my account, but no notification was sent to my gmail, despite the fact that I have the email alert options set to notify me. I wonder if it is because the email alert options state: You can set whether or not you would like to be alerted via email when comments are posted on your network or you receive a new message. Would you like to receive email alerts?
Yes, I want to receive group broadcasts (default)No, do not alert me via email of new comments and messagesHowever, broadcasts have their own folder and do not appear in the inbox. I suspect that the notification function is linked to new messages being placed the inbox folder and not to new messages in general to the account. Also (as I have not been home to be able to download the update to check), I assume that the character builder update for Dragon #389 and #390 and Dungeon #180 and #181 will not include any of the article information for Dark Sun and Essentials. An example of this would be Dark Sun: The Slave Theme. My assumption is that all of the Dark Sun and Essentials materials from various Dungeon and Dragon articles will be incorporated to the character builder once the Dark Sun Campaign Guide and the D&D Essentials books are actually added to the character builder.

The FAQ says nothing about Windows 7 support.

I'd just be happy for decent printing support in the character builder like .doc, .pdf or .html support. It is troubling that Wizards launches all this cool new content but doesn't talk to the character builder folks about supporting it first. I'm still laughing about how the whole online tabletop tools that were supposed to be part of the original 4E launch and we would all be playing online with custom miniatures... ;-)

Paolo said whatever he planned to say would be said after the update. If he says something this week, I think that would be within the window.
Agreed.
Wasn't it mentioned in the thread where he mentioned the fact that he would have something to say that the mob would cry foul about not hearing what they wanted when they wanted?
Oh yeah:
LOL! Looks like this genie's out of the out of the bottle weather you intended it to be or not. I can see it now:
"YOU PROMISED US A BIG ANNOUNCEMENT AND NOW THIS? I GUARANTEE YOU SIR, I HAVE TURNED MY AUTO RENEW OFF!"
All kidding aside, let him talk when he's ready (and the statement has been vetted by legal or whoever has to approve these things).
On an unrelated note:
Having to dig in the forums for news about what's going on does seem a little silly (if I hadn't looked I would have resubscribed after getting my essentials stuff thinking the DS must have been already uploaded). Why isn't there a news thing (or an RSS feed) on the main page?

Do you recall the digital tools that were supposed to come out with 3E? Granted the promises were not as grand as the 4E release but they died the same quite death that the vast majority of the digital tools for 4E died.
I'm excited to see what Paolo has planned for the digital tools but WotC's past has taught me that whatever they are they are unlikely to come to fruition.
I just don't believe the tools folks have the support they need. I myself have started using MapTools but if I had a Gee Wiz 3D game table built for 4E like we were promised I'd use that for sure... and I would be willing to pay more for the subscription.

I wasn't saying that in the past there had been announcements when the CB was updated. I was saying that if they are trying to communicate better and they have an announcement system in place, why can't we get an e-mail announcement about the CB being updated. Especially when it isn't on the Content Calendar.

Considering you guys are talking about me, let me give you a quick update I'm still waiting for approval, I thought it would be a done deal (last week), but I encountered an unexpected snag this morning. I'm still pushing for a more consistent and complete communication channel, but it's probably not going to happen this week In the meanwhile, let it be known that the new Compendium is the first in a set of revamped tools we'll release in the coming months. It is not "the web based tool system" in its entirety, it's just the start. And you probably noticed how quickly we fixed the missing Psionic Power content: that's the standard I'd like to keep up for the studio in the future (the quick fix, not the missing content )

Revamped tools...perhaps I wasn't too far off in my speculation. Now see, that's useful information: "Thing Q is not X, it is only Y, which will be expanded upon." It might not seem like all that much, but it is a statement about your work. Something solid to hang from while I hoot and screech. I hope that the future holds regular (like, a monthly editorial kinda thing) updates with more details, screenshots, good stuff like that. Thanks - this helps.
