I happen to like some of the essentials options and am upset that they aren't headed into the CB. Its not like they're THAT different than regular characters such that you have to scrap everything.
Certainly the racial updates would be viable at the very least.

My brother and I are having the same ethical dilemma. It's fun to watch a company make strategic or tactical errors and to cause turmoil among their customers, but it's less fun when it's a company you want to survive.

Gee..Thanks a lot wizards. Now I'm going to have to do up an excel spreadsheet so I can gernerate NPCs for my Dark Sun game quickly. I was planning on making extensive use of character builder in my campaign, and the only reason I haven't started running it was because I was waiting for the Dark Sun stuff to be added into character builder. Thankyou for nothing. I won't be subscribing to DDI. Good thing I didn't just throw my money straight into it.

Does anybody remember how long it took to get CB up and running in the first place? With Essentials and Dark Sun added into the mix, they're going to have to re-arrange the entire interface. Add into that the face that there are new styles of character sheet that they're tooling around with, and how to make those work, and I wouldn't be suprised to see it take a month or two MORE for it to be totally up to snuff.
But we wiil get it. Or Wizards will disintegrate, and someone else will have to take up the D&D mantle. Either way, our hobby doesn't die, and we'll be better off in the long run.

Ok the first of part of October has come and still no update. I'm just wondering if the techs even prepped for DS and Ess. It's nice to pay for a service and get prompt and timely service.

Well, at least we've got a release date. Now we wait six days to see whether it moves again. Wizards has, unfortunately, developed something of a credibility and value gap that they need to work on making up; this'll be a first step.

It's times like this that I miss TSR. They gave us a character generator that worked where you could add custom information, generate NPC's quickly and even generate whole encounters quickly if you needed them. And it came with two map making programs. It was a very useful set of tools. I don't think we will see a computer product for role playing up to that standard for a very long time. It's one flaw was lack of updates, but at least you could put the stuff in yourself.

What makes you think Essentials won't be in the character builder?
Spoiler:

I am running a campaign that involves a BBEG whose soul was trapped in a gemstone (Trap the Soul Spell). The spell itself has a duration that is either permanent or lasts until the gem is broken, thus freeing the trapped creature. Problem is, the DM guide and Players Manual (both 3.5 ed) have stats for all sorts of items, just not gemstones. Can anyone help me out with the hardness and hitpoints of gemstones? Oh and the gems can be virtually any type (the stone has to be worth at least 10,000 gp because the soul encased in the gem has 10 HD). Thanks in advance.
I agree with BlueBlazer. In this case the gem should have a hardness of PLOT and PLOT hp.

It's simply that each book released to date has made it into the next CB update, and Dark Sun and Essentials, after having been announced as the reason for no updates since August, are breaking that pattern further by not appearing in the 12 October update either.
