Lets say you have a condition applied to you that gets worse after a failed saving throw (for example sleep starts as slow, but becomes unconscious if you fail the first saving throw).  What happens if you fail a bonus saving throw granted by an ally or the font of life warden class feature?  Does it count as a failed saving throw?

What if this was a death saving throw?

Bonus saves never count toward failed saving throws. This rule was added with the release of PHB2, but was almost universally house-ruled before that.
Ever feel like people on these forums can't possibly understand how wrong they are? Feeling trolled? Don't get mad. Report Post.

The exact quote in the compendium is from Dragon Magazine 373:

Sometimes an effect changes as a target fails saving throws against it. The new effect, specified in a “First Failed Saving Throw” or a “Second Failed Saving Throw” entry, takes effect after the target fails a saving throw against the previous effect at the end of the target’s turn. The effect doesn’t change if the creature fails a saving throw against it at a time other than the end of its turn.

So, as novacat said, the only failed saving throws that will change the effect are saving throws made at the end of the effected creatures turn.

I wasn't able to find this quote anywhere in Dragon 373. Do you know what article it's supposed to be in?

It's not.  The compendium says it's from Dragon 373 but it isn't in there.  But as someone else pointed out, it's in the PHB2 on page 219.
Sorry WOTC, you lost me with Essentials.  So where I used to buy every book that came out, now I will be very choosy about what I buy.  Can we just get back to real 4e?

Check out the 4e Conversion Wiki.

2. A barbarian hits people with his axe.  A warlord hits people with his barbarian.
3. Boo-freakin'-hoo, ya light-slingin' finger-wigglers. -- MrCelcius in response to the Cleric's Healer's Lore nerf

a death save is not a Save in the sense of the other saves. I posted about 3 months ago about this and the thread died quitely. I had called the WOTC question people and was told that if someone gave you a bonus death save with a power or what ever, that if you fail it you take a checkbox. Now I don't recall who I spoke to but if you really want to find out call them or better yet do an online question thing and put it in the consolidated answers area.
