Looking back at what tools were promised in early 2008, we've only seen the CB and Monster Builder Beta... pre 4e release there were screen shots of the other tools (VIRTUAL GAME TABLE!!!) in dev and I haven't heard anything since...
Think about the various issues D&D 4E "online" has had; I think WotC's layoffs may've reached deep into the online team. It certainly feels as if they need talent, creativity, and maybe even simple headcount in the non-book area.

The email notification about the latest missed deadline is the whole of September's tasty new tools content. Please enjoy the first use of this exciting and helpful new feature!
Be advised that as more deadlines are missed, the email notice feature may become overloaded and you might not get your "We are missing another deadline" email until the month after the triggering missed deadline.

I have generally been a backer of DDI in person, and mute on the subject on assorted fora, although very annoyed at those who never seem to give WotC a break.
This, however, is the first time that I have felt like the annual layoffs have hurt the viability of D&D as a game. The seeming lack of continuity in the DDI programming team (is anybody stilll working for that team now who was in 2008?) reinforces the perception that institutional memory is suffering, and thereby affecting my content as a consumer.
Were my subscription to expire this month, or in October, I would share much of the wrothness expressed here and elsewhere.
I will not become truly upset until/unless there is a delay in publication such as happened last October, November, December, and January. (Although, I will note that they did updates 2 weeks apart for Jan/Feb, which redeems that delay somewhat.)

I never even got the e-mail about the missed update. And no, it wasn't in my spam folder.

As for myself, I'm going to give WotC one more chance. If we get all the updates before October 11th including Dark Dun books, Psionic Power and Essentials, and if the Monster Builder is fixed, I'm satisfied. Otherwise I'm going to cancel my DDI subscription until my faith has been restored, which might take quite a while.

This was the first time they tried to send such a massive mass-email. I hear it hit their systems pretty hard and not everyone was reached. Don't know what they've done to correct the problem for the future though.

For most of the people I know who didn't get the e-mail, they have their settings set to block broadcasts. That's not something WotC could do anything about.

Not only did I not receive the e-mail, the first time I saw the text I thought it was a joke.
No it was not in my junk folder. I have 15 ~ 20 things pr day offering me**** I'll never ask for but not this.

I suspect adding a lot of the Dark Sun stuff is probably the set back. They have to find a way to program in the new Themes into the CB. Who knows if they're going to put it in its own tab, or maybe mix it into the Background tab or somewhere else. At any rate, I can imagine that that's probably the biggest hurdle they're facing this time around. Like I said before, I'm bummed that we're not getting our update until October, but in the grand scheme of things we have to remember that the people at WOTC are people too. Yes, it's their job to get software and books and articles out according to schedule, but sometimes things just do not work out the way we'd like. We should all thank our lucky stars that the CB and MB are not going the way of Duke Nukem Forever

I just played a Warpriest this Saturday and read through the Heroes of the Fallen Lands. Dark Sun and the Theme element I am sure is part of the delay but Essentials has tons more new game elements in it that do not fit the classic power schedule in the PHB1. I would put the blame clearly on trying to delay Dark Sun and move up Essentials into the same update. That was a recipe for disaster. They should have tackled the Theme issue without having to worry about reprogramming six whole specialized class builds. Very specialized. I would honestly be surprised if the update comes out before Thanksgiving. -Warunsun
