The Dragon's Altar
By Rodney Thompson
In this month's Eye on Dark Sun
, Rodney details the Dragon – a powerful being of defiling magic that must be placated with slave sacrifices by the Sorcerer-Kings to prevent it's defiling of the City-States. The Dragon's Altar, an infamous sacrificial locale, may be an adventure site for mercenaries travelling with Templars, for heroes captured and enslaved by the Templars, or more. But mysteries surround the ominous Altar as well: the Altar Skulkers that live in the lava around will kidnap slaves and kill travellers and the stone around the altar is even defiled, to the point that deadstone weapons and certain legendary boons can be acquired from the land itself.
Most sensible people of Athas stay far, far away from the Dragon’s Altar, even when no sacrifices are waiting to be claimed. Aside from the taint left on the landscape by the Dragon’s presence over the years, there is the (not unreasonable) fear that the Dragon might reappear at any time. Other than those being sacrificed, templars are the only people of Athas who can openly claim to have visited the Dragon’s Altar and survived.
