Here is my interpretation of why the Essentials class is easier.

When you make an essential's character, you get a few class features and a few race features and 2 at-will and 2(?) encounter powers.
Done except for choosing a feat.

Exactly like the Builds in the PHBs. When you go up a level you get another encounter power,I'm guessing those are already chosen for you. Premade character builds. And the powers are simpler then the PHB ones.

If you wanna dig through the powers from the PHB, you can swap it out, but you don't have to. The characters are all done for someone who wants to grab it and go.

I have 3 players that are going to love this, except they'll probably be level 11 by the time this releases anyway.

I have 3 players that would probably stick with building their own, because they enjoy that.

And all these characters will be compatible to run in the same game.
There won't be a need to define Essential's or "core". One is a fighter, the other is a knight. One is a warpriest and the other is a cleric maximized in healing.

You get stronger as a core character by gaining daily powers, the essential characters will get class powers, doing the smae, but pre-chosen. And again, I'm guessing if you wanna get a daily instead, you'll be able to swap it out.

I'm excited to see the essentials line of products.

I support and agree with this post 100%  It summarizes everything I was about to post myself.

Well, yeah, exactly. LOL! But for some reason making a new character seems to really upset some players.

Yeah, needing to make a new character in order to have the "support" really makes it questionable to call it "support" for "your character".  I mean, we could say 4e offered new support to the 3e cleric since it let you make a new cleric that would work with new options.  When people want "support for their character" they mean their existing one, not a rebuild.

Also, it seems like a lot of people are assuming the "Domain encounter power" is a single pre-chosen power, and I don't think that's necessarily the case.  My interpretation after reading the article was that there would be multiple "Sun" and "Storm" powers per level and you picked the one you wanted.  Otherwise, I don't know how they're going to fill 200+ pages with only four classes.  Plus, they say you can swap a Sun or Storm power for any normal cleric encounter power anyway, so there's really no simplification unless you specifically decide to ignore all your choices, which was possible with the PHB as well.

I didn't say to make a new character.
Besides isn't that what you have to do when a new build comes out?
Besides retraining everything class related, the only other way is to make a new character.
And you still can choose some of the powers from the Drunken Monk to add to your already made PHB3 Monk.

How would an Essentials Monk article be different from the just released Monk Article?
Why would the Essentials Monk article not be as compatible to your already made character as the just released Monk Article?

When I was playing a CHA Paladin, and Divine Powers came out, I talked to my GM and rebuilt the paladin at the current level, 5, so I could make use of Divine Sanction.
If the Essentials Paladin came out, and I wanted to play it, I would have to do the same thing.

I am assuming the Domain encounter power is one power at each indicated level.
What the rest of the book will have, I have no idea.
Remember though it is a paperback, digest-sized book.

Just wondering if they are taking lessons from their Magic: The Gathering line where there are more & more pre-built decks.  With so many editions of Magic cards out there, it's hard to bring new blood in, especially if you have to buy a bunch of cards to get going.

However, you can spend around $20 and get a pre-built deck to play with friends to see if you like the game.  If you do & gain experience, you'll start playing around with the decks you have & may even make your own.

Possibly this is what they want from essentials.

The biggest problem I see is continued balance that WOTC desires so much for the game.  If the new game, for lack of a better way of describing it, is simpler, it will be interesting to actually see how that plays out.  To make essentials simpler, something needs to be removed or streamlined.  Will this simplification (in whatever manner they chose to get to 'simpler') make the essential characters weaker or stronger compared to the 'core' characters/builds?

As has been posted earlier in this thread, however, I ain't worrying too much about it right now.  Too radical a change will simply ensure that a new version war starts and that's not something they can afford to have happen.  Hence their decision to make sure that compatibility with the current game isn't an issue.
