I can't believe there are people who think that DDi isn't worth the price. What you're getting for $70 a year is ALL of 4e. The whole thing. Everything that is published plus some exclusive stuff isn't published. Plus a collection of convienient, high quality tools.
It had got to be over ten thousand pages of content. And you can get ALL of it for a one time payment of $10. Then any time something is released for D&D you can decide if you want that book/supplement/whatever and get it for $10.
I consider D&Di as a subscription to the character builder more than anything else. And the rest of the stuff is just a neat bonus.
I'm going to say this one more time for emphasis. The character creater / compendium is ALL of fourth edition. You seriously want it to be free?

It does make me wonder if they sold the two magazines seperately how many people would actually pay for them...

I totally know what you mean, Darth-Apocalis. I think it ridiculous that when I purchased the Players Handbook, it has rules for playing classes other than rangers. I don't want to play anything but a ranger and more than half the book has rules for all sorts of stuff I never plan to use. I think it's completely unethical for Wizards to make me pay for a whole book when all I want is about half of it. (Don't get me started on all the monsters int he Monster Maual I have no intention on using; what gall of Wizards not to charge me by the monster!)

People think $71 a year is a bad price? For two magazines, early previews, an online database and a very informative character building tool? That's a steal.
Oh? You only play one class? Just want it for character builder? Buy it once year, buy it a second time when a new book relevant to your character is released. $20.
I find it amusing that people want the CB updates stand alone, when many of these update *are released in the magazine in the package*. If you want the updates *as soon as they come out*, pay for it!
As it stands, you have a full package deal ($71) for those that want their stuff as fast as possible. If you only want CB, you pay less ($20-30) assuming you only pay when a new book comes out, or enough articles have piled up.
As far as I can tell, they are already catering to both sides, and its a bargain for both. It's a steal if you use all the features, and a good deal if you use only a few.

Gotta speak up here : I'd buy 'em ala cart (as it were). I collected Dragon Magazine (when it was in print) for fourteen or fifteen years (over 200 issues). I'm not a fan of the digital format but I still really enjoy the mags. Reading 'em is as much a part of my hobby as actual gaming is. I subscribed solely for Dragon but then quickly got hooked on the CB. I still enjoy the occasional 'fluff' that the mags offer (the CB is mostly crunch or rules related). The mags have their own value for me.

Windshadow was being sarcastic. (I hope)
Ohhhhh! Well I still dont understand alot of people's comments on here. I mean if you dont want to pay money for DDI, then dont, its that simple. I dont like the idea of splitting everything up, like if you just want the CB, or the digital magazine, then you just pay for that. I mean that seems like a good idea, but then for people who wanted accesss to everything it would probably cost even more money. All in all I think its a pretty good deal, you get the CB, the MB, Dragon and Dungeon, and access to all the Crunch from all the books for like 70 bucks a year, works for me. Obviously not everyone is going to see that as a bargain, so then dont buy it, or do like what has been suggested on here already, just get a month and download updates and what ever you want and there you go, you get the features you want with out spending 70 bux a year.
I survived Section 4 and all I got was this lousy sig
Off-topic and going downhill from there

Well I did the same, but stopped when 3E came out. I quit playing D&D and so had no desire to purchase magazines that were made for it. My Dragon Magazine collection stops at #273 (the last 2E issue). I got DDI when it came out and had it for a year, so I also have the issues from that time, although I find them terribly lacking from what they used to be. Opinion only, of course.

They got better (IMO). I agree that the initial year's worth kind of stank, but they've been much better recently, especially in the last six months or so.

You mean I have to purchase the books to have access to all the options! Why is Wizards of the Coast so dishonest by forcing me to buy products to access to their content! I won't give $1 to a company that wants me to be a customer to have access to their products.
No one is complaining about spending money, outside of the amount of it. The complaint is that the product we want is being with a package that isn't desired, atop of a subscription rate that is above cost for any compariable competition.

In short, yes. It's really one magazine, not two. You are paying them 80 to have the privledge of being a playtester for your 'sneak previews', something they should be paying YOU for, the online database typically was available for free last edition, and is typically is created fan based for other games, and a character creator is never worth paying MMO rates for, and I don't WANT ALL THIS OTHER JUNK.
It's a bad deal.
