You get very defensive about this whole thing, which is puzzling to me. I'm just asking: WHY THE KATANA??

why is a scimitar so different then a longsword? why a broadsword? why is a mordenkrad so much different then a maul? why is a craghammer so much different then a warhammer?

so, (following your caps) WHY NOT THE KATANA?

Kenjutsu Training I got the name from Wikipedia, where I was told it was "The Art of Sword Fighting"

kenjustu is not really "the art of sword fighting". its (litterly translated) sword-techniques. If I train a technique to parry blows with a sword, that's also kenjutsu. as would be a techique using a katana in one hand.

The katana, elegant as it looks, is still a mildly curved blade that can be used for slashing or thrusting. Sound like a longsword? It kind of does to me.

Oh come on now. A katana was a curved blade, only sharp at one side. Last time I checked longswords are sharp at both sides.

IMO katana's are as much longswords as bastards swords and broadswords are.

For years, I've lived a double life. In the day, I do my job - I ride the bus, roll up my sleeves with the hoi-polloi. But at night, I live a life of exhilaration, of missed heartbeats and adrenalin. And, if the truth be known a life of dubious virtue. I won't deny it - I've been engaged in violence, even indulged in it. I've maimed and killed adversaries, and not merely in self-defence. I've exhibited disregard for life, limb and property, and savoured every moment. You may not think it, to look of me but I have commanded armies, and conquered worlds. And though in achieving these things I've set morality aside, I have no regrets. For though I've led a double life, at least I can say - I've lived.

Uh-huh. So why doesn't the wakizashi have its own stats? Come on, folks, it's single-edged and curved, but the short sword is double-edged and straight. By that alone, that means the wakizashi should be its own weapon. That being the case, I WANT MY WAKIZASHI STATS, DAMMIT!!!!!

It's just an instace of you arguing aesthetics, is all. Just because a weapon looks slightly different doesn't warrant it being its own weapon. I've said it already, but: The weapons in the AV are different enough from their derivative that they are their own weapons. Kukri are not designed for throwing (don't give me that BS about Alice throwing one in one of the RE movies, they were not thrown the proper way), parrying daggers have elongated handguards, broadswords have wider and shorter blades, which changes the combat style for it. Triple flails are not standard flails, khopesh are very different from longswords because their hook-like designs makes them suited for tripping/trapping (which a longsword, by design alone, can't do unless you hold it by the blade, which would probably hurt), and so on and so on.

(1) craghammer and mordenkrad? heck, there is no difference between a maul and greatclub other then astetics: heavy end meets other guys head ...

(2) I would have thought that singlebladed weapons had different techniques then dualbladed weapons - al least where broadswords or kopeshes have different techniques then other swords ...

I wanted to stop by and say I'm still here but RL has been pretty busy lately.  Reading through the posts I see I've missed very little.  I titled this thread as I did because I wanted to focus on the classes first.  Then perhaps races and other aspects.  Seems sad that everything has to always focus on one single sword stat.  I have seen some pretty good arguements on both sides but my prefference still rests in giving it it's own stats.  Or at the very least maing it a bastard sword.  Longsword just doesn't feel right to me.
