Maybe we should be trying to look for new 'cool' ways of using mechanics in D&D that haven't been touched on yet by racial abilites.
Such as a 'fleet of foot' race that has a racial power along the same kind of lines of the full discipline powers of the monk.
Or some kind of shadow inspired race that has a power along the lines of turn undead but in reverse. It affects living targets. (obviously needs balancing I'm just throwing out some ideas.)
Or maybe a race that can daze a single target with their racial power, to represent a race with innate psychic powers.
There are probably plenty of other ideas, these are just a few off the top of my head.

I've been tinkering around with making a plant race based on the myhology surrounding the Mandrake. I think its represented enough in pop culture that at least a few people will recognize its source and it might have more traction as a real-life mythological element than something completely original.
Lately, i've had to reexamine some of the racial features since they are pretty close to things that have been released (or will be released) but the signature racial power of the race is the Mandragora Scream, which is a close burst reactive debuff. I did have them with feats and features that involve the theme of regrowth but after reading about how the mul is going to have abilities that revolve around being tough and making saves, i've been considering other avenues, including working with poison and mind-effecting powers (both of which are associated with RL mandrake lore).
I also have a myraid of various monster stat blocks based of the basic Mandrake race, all belonged to an extended family of creatures collectively called Mandragoras. They range from the small, screaming Mandragora Sprout that represents the creature of classic myth to the poison-based Nightshade skirmisher that burrows before attacking and the desert-swelling Luffah variant.

Goblins, Bugbears, Kobolds and Hobgoblins in that order.
On a side note and just wishful thinking. I wouldn't mind seeing Lizardfolk developed into playable races for D&D. I think a Lizardman Fighter would be awesome to play, and yes I know there's dragonborn, but they're not the same as a lizardman. Also, Bullywugs would be kind of cool as well.

I wish people would stop qualifying Lizardmen with the "yes, I know there are Dragonborn but they're not the same!," spiel. Of course they're not the same. Dragonborn aren't even freaking reptiles, and WotC has gone of it's way to show that. So the whole Lizardmen/Dragonborn qualifier is completely redundant.

I'm just saying that you can make your race easily by refluffing another. Other concepts, like Horseshoecrabfolk cannot be. Right now, with core rules, you can easily play a Half-Ogre. Not so much with our living fossil friend here.
Why doesn't a refluffed Dwarf make a perfectly good craaaaaaab people? Is it the lack of waterbreathing? Can't he be a land craaaaaab person?

... Damn it. Now I want to write up a setting where all of the races use the same mechanics, but are vastly different critters.

Yes, I am expressing my opinions (even complaints - le gasp!) about the current iteration of the play-test that we actually have in front of us.
No, I'm not going to wait for you to tell me when it's okay to start expressing my concerns (unless you are WotC).

I wanted to be clear. I brought up the subject of Lizardmen before and got a whole lot of replies telling me basically, "what do we need Lizardmen when there's Dragonborn?" I'm well aware dragonborn are descended from dragons and lizardfolk are reptiles.

There was a thread up about this on the Races board like forever ago. It's definitely been purged by now, but I still remember one or two of the good suggestions. One that I really liked was for Dragonborn as based on a Pheonix of Thunderbird instead of a Dragon, being more like anthropomorphic eagles than anthropomorphic lizards (yes, I know, not the point). There may be a need to limit the racial power to Fire, Lightning, or Thunder damage, but the rest fits pretty perfectly.
Why, yes, as a matter of fact I am the Unfailing Arbiter of All That Is Good Design (Even More So Than The Actual Developers) TMSpeaking of things that were badly designed, please check out this thread for my Minotaur fix. What have the critics said, you ask? "If any of my players ask to play a Minotaur, I'm definitely offering this as an alternative to the official version." - EmpactWB "If I ever feel like playing a Minotaur I'll know where to look!" - Undrave "WoTC if you are reading this - please take this guy's advice." - Ferol_Debtor_of_Torm "Really full of win. A minotaur that is actually attractive for more than just melee classes." - Cpt_Micha Also, check out my recent GENASI variant! If you've ever wished that your Fire Genasi could actually set stuff on fire, your Water Genasi could actually swim, or your Wind Genasi could at least glide, then look no further. Finally, check out my OPTIONS FOR EVERYONE article, an effort to give unique support to the races that WotC keeps forgetting about. Includes new racial feature options for the Changeling, Deva, Githzerai, Gnoll, Gnome, Goliath, Half-Orc, Kalashtar, Minotaur, Shadar-Kai, Thri-Kreen, Warforged and more!

If lizardmen are reptiles then I don't think they will be made. Artists can't put boobs on them Unless they go ahead anyway...

No one responded to my idea. Now I feel sad.
