My lazy lords tend to have good basic attacks. Since I tend to choose intelligent blademaster I have a good mba and rba which is really nice. I then use a chieftan's javelin to give a further boost to granted attacks and I can pick powers that have a MBA such as vengence is mine. Keeps me versatile. I still run into a problem if I have few or no characters with decent basic attacks but my chances are very good.

The downside of that approach is that you end up needing weapon expertisse, if not also weapon proficiency and focus, in addition to a multiclass feat you don't care for otherwise and the intelligent blademaster istelf, which means you've completely lost the advantage in feats you gained from being lazy. Also, you'll need to invest in a fully upgraded chieftan's weapon, instead of just sticking with the +1 version for the entire campaign, and you can't wear non-proficient fullplate, either, so your item advantage is gone. And this ends up giving you an eventual +6 or even +8 to hit on your strength attacks over the fully lazy version. This is a problem, as it can leave you needing less then a 20 to hit with Band of Fellows, which can mess you up, as your at will effectiveness drops precipitously after BoF hits. Of course, you can make BoF with an improvised attack, bopping it with your shield or punching it, but then you're giving up the chieftan's bonus to your allies, and reach, if you were using a chieftan's greatspear. You could dual-wield chieftan's spears, one good and one bad, but then you don't have reach or a shield.
I'm not saying the melee training / intelligent blademaster route isn't a reasonable route to take. But it's not an ideal solution, there's a lot of hidden costs involved for a lazy warlord. It certainly doesn't 'solve' the build's problems.

Any thoughts on Themes that are particularly suited to Warlords, LDB?

Guardian, Seer, and...probably something else, but Guardian is almost certainly the top choice for STR-using warlords (allows you to get another Standard Action attack to ruin people with instead of an immediate), and Seer works nicely with lazylords.
Mountain Cleave Rule: You can have any sort of fun, including broken, silly fun, so long as I get to have that fun too (e. g., if you can warp reality with your spells, I can cleave mountains with my blade).

I took merc on mine. Free action knock prone is nice, and handy for attack granting (no action, triggered on hit) and excellent with a bravelord/KAM. Skills are ones that you are probably already doing alright in, and a little edge to keep you up in a fight (and another boost if you are a dragonborn who hovers around bloodied a lot). the utility powers seem pretty useful as well.

I keep seeing "themes" and I can't seem to find them listed in the character builder. Any advice/hints?

they were added last month and should be in near the end of this month. if you want to look as some old themes make a character from dark sun. The original themes are in the dark sun campaign.

Outside of destructive suprise, scent of victory, and A rock and a hard place are there any level 5 or lower dailies that either do not require attack rolls, have an attack roll but it is a basic attack so my intelligent blademaster feat applies, or has a powerful effect that is not reliant on me hitting? I have plenty of encounters and at wills but dailies are a problem.

Well, there is Stand the Fallen, which is neat when it hits, but the effect is powerful enough even when you don't. It's one of those dailies that can turn an encounter gone bad into a winnable one all by itself.
