Confessions of a Full-Time Wizard: Such a waste of Space.

I have been reading Dragon Mag for a good many years. Well I have been reading the Mags since 4th edition came out and I noticed this section called Confessions of a Full-Time Wizard and it's horrible. This space can be used for something thats actually useful. I have never found anything useful out of the articles that are written. Wizards could use that space far more efficiently than it is now. What are your opinions?

A Glitterboy is good, but sometimes good old Tehrig is better.

Useful as in nice crunchy bits for your game?  No, not really.

Useful as in generally entertaining and a fun read?  Yes.

Personally, I really enjoy Shelly's columns.  Sure, there's very little in there that ever gets translated to my games, but I almost always find myself chuckling while reading her column.

The other thing I think the column does is it helps introduce the game to a wider audience, to people who ordinarily might not ever considering playing the game -- people like Shelly herself if you go back far enough in her work (her book in particular talks about this).

To this end, I find her column much more useful to me than say a warden essentials column.  Although the latter has obvious crunchy bits, I really have no desire to play a warden at present, so such a column won't provide me with much.

/shrug.  To each his own.

I see what you are saying. I mean I thought that book was crap, but like you said to each his own. It's like that article from Dragon #379 Dating & Dragons. Honestly I see no point is these kinds of articles.

I think Shelly's articles are great!

They're fun, they're entertaining, they inveigle the reader into being objective enough to laugh at their own gamer-oddness, they provide an alternative to constant game immersion, they remind you that the most important aspect of the hobby is people interacting, they provide an accessible personality to the people behind the scenes of development, etc.

I'm inclined to agree with Gargs454; I have no real use for a Warden Essentials, Class Acts: Psion or Winning Races: Dragonborn. Confession's of a Full Time Wizard offers me something to entertain myself with that doesn't feel like mulling through a stereo-system instruction manual.

I like them now, too.

It's an interesting perspective on D&D.

I agree with Xun,  I find the articles to be very meh.  Feels more like something that should be put into blogs than reserved for space in the flagship magazine.

I guess, I fail to see why someone would be reading a niche magazine that isn't already playing the game.

I would much rather see something like interviews from around the world with game stores to see how different the game is played from area to area, than the geek ratings done by Shelly

I certainly appreciate her wit and sense of humor.  I even ffind myself chucklign at time s at what she writes.  However, I would say 99 times out of 100 I skip over the CoaFTW article.
Get power cards at the Dungeon Crawl!
Now with Dragon 382 & 3 and Primal power Barbarian & Druid! (Psst! You can fan it on Facebook too)

Wizards fight dirty.  They hit their enemies in the NADs.

A barbarian hits people with his axe.  A warlord hits people with his barbarian.

while i'd never want to see a crunchy article moved or dropped to make space for the full-time wizard. i don't really complain. i agree that it's mildly entertaining and invites a wider audience to look at D&D with a new perspective.

I gave up reading her articles a long time ago. Not humorous at all to me despite the painful attempts at levity. (shrug)

Maybe if she didn't try so hard to be funny, it would be more entertaining.

I have my suspicions that it's there mainly for the female demographic.
May I introduce you to Autocard? If you wrap the name of a card in [c][/c] tags (for example, [c]Lightning Bolt[/c] = Lightning Bolt), it will automatically link to the card's page on gatherer, so we can more quickly look up the cards in question (not to mention automatically displaying a picture on mouse-over).
