I really like the idea of it being built for a wild sorcerer, though I am not sure how I feel about it being so limited. I think it would be better for versatility and flavor if you went the Changeling/Doppleganger rout and gave it "+2 Dexterity or Intelegence, +2 Charisma." That way, they could be great wild sorcerers, fey/dark warlocks, wizards or psions (but also rogues!?! O.O).

I don't have time for a very long response right now, but I do want to put out there that I disagree with this almost entirely. It's been very popular recently for home-brewers to steal the variable ability score bonus idea from the Changeling, but it's completely unwarranted the vast majority of the time that it's done or suggested. The Changeling gets to do this because versatility and flexibility are its entire schtick, so unless versatility and flexibility are integral to a home-brewed race's flavor, there's just not a good enough excuse to do this. Frankly, Unown don't seem to fit this bill to me.

In this particular case, it's not any more limited than the Drow or Halfling are, which is to say that it's not any more limited than any other race with two static ability score bonuses (a.k.a. every race other than Changeling and Human).

I agree with a lot of other things you said, but I'll get back to those when I get back home. ^_~

Why, yes, as a matter of fact I am the Unfailing Arbiter of All That Is Good Design (Even More So Than The Actual Developers) TM

Speaking of things that were badly designed, please check out this thread for my Minotaur fix. What have the critics said, you ask?
"If any of my players ask to play a Minotaur, I'm definitely offering this as an alternative to the official version." - EmpactWB
"If I ever feel like playing a Minotaur I'll know where to look!" - Undrave
"WoTC if you are reading this - please take this guy's advice." - Ferol_Debtor_of_Torm
"Really full of win. A minotaur that is actually attractive for more than just melee classes." - Cpt_Micha

Also, check out my recent GENASI variant! If you've ever wished that your Fire Genasi could actually set stuff on fire, your Water Genasi could actually swim, or your Wind Genasi could at least glide, then look no further.

Finally, check out my OPTIONS FOR EVERYONE article, an effort to give unique support to the races that WotC keeps forgetting about. Includes new racial feature options for the Changeling, Deva, Githzerai, Gnoll, Gnome, Goliath, Half-Orc, Kalashtar, Minotaur, Shadar-Kai, Thri-Kreen, Warforged and more!

Wow, you posess incredible insight in the art of mechanics, Crimson_Concerto, and I applaud you! I never thought about the "versatility" aspect of the changeling's ability scores, and it makes perfect sense now that you mention it.  This project... will be awesome.

Alright, tossing in my critiques too, while everyone else is at it.

"On Ability Scores" Show
I'm agreeing with Crimson on this one. However, IF we do set up versitality, it'd be +2 Charisma/Inteligence, not +2 Dexterity/Inteligence. Yes, this means getting uneeded extras on the Reflex thus screwing the rest of the NADs, it remembers that Unown is tied in Attack and Sp. Attack.

"On Psychic Type" Show
I'm supporting Teifling-based resistances rather than Genasi based resistances. I actually love Swordmages, so I play Genasi a lot because they go so well together. Havn't actually played a Teifling yet. Still want to keep the Force and Necrotic (could have sworn there was a Shadow element for D&D) part though. I just love thinking how the Fighting-Psychic-Shadow triangle closely resembles the Fire-Water-Grass triangle from the starters. I wouldn't be supprised of someday your starters were Fighting-Psychic-Shadow in some new generation.

"On Languages" Show
I'm sure "formal language" was an issue for the writers of the D&D books, so I take absolutely no offence to you mentioning it. Besides, it's an issue I've been dealing with for a while.
I was intending to keep Unown trapped at whatever symbol it chose, but that's my informal language causing the problem. Although I do find the idea somewhat interesting of it constantly shifting. It's purely flavor, however.
But, it does bring up an interesting issue. Do Unown speak through focused Telepathy (one target) or general Telepathy (everyone within range)? Alright, I just made up those two terms on the spot, but which one were you thinking of?

"On Mouth-ness" Show
I'll be changing to your wording of it, since it's both formal and fixes Endurance. I'm actualy transitioning from 3.5 to 4e, so I quickly thought of 3.5's wording towards Outsiders.

"On Trance" Show
Once again, I'll use your wording on it next time I update it.

"On Levitate" Show
On Loads and Disarm, that was the past 3.5 part of me thinking there. I actually did check for Disarm somewhere, but didn't find it. But I figured it'd be better to put it in for emphasis that Levitate isn't better than having two hands.
I'm thinking of having "Active Levitation" and "Passive Levitation." Active meaning you treat it as if you have a hand carrying it, and Passive meaning as if it were in a backpack or attahed to you. It takes a minor action to switch an object between Active and Passive. (Such as drinking a potion.) Armor would be considered Passive, but Weapons, Shields and Implements have to be Active.
Of course, this might just get too wordy.

"On Feats" Show
Yeah, these definately need work. I'm thinking of changing Focused to manually choosing it INSTEAD of rolling for it, and maybe switch Shifting to your idea.
Also, the way it is right now, it's "too" similar to the Wild Sorcerer. Maybe have it change every short/extended rest instead of every casting? Of course, the feats would have to change. Focused would be on the spot outside of a rest (it'll revert back to what it originally afterwards), and Shifting would probably be rolling 2d10 on the rest. Besides, Unown were stuck with only one option for Hidden Power, and that was when you caught them. This change more closely resembles that.

The way telepathy works in 4e, the way that I indicated at least, is that it works between two individuals at a time (the telepathic creature, and the target). However, a neat feat for Unown would be to be able to communicate telepathicly between any number of telepathic creatures within range.

If you are interested in persuing telepathy of Unown, check out the Kalashtar in the Eberron PG.
