Why couldn't something like what I mentioned with my previous post work as a controller?  It seems to me that if it's possible to boost and buff my allies via morale and inspiration that I could hinder and harm my foes via lowering their morale and controlling their emotions.  As a matter of fact, this actually a very valid tactic employed in many real life conflicts.

I'm sorry, if I seemed to be trying to hijack your idea there, just trying to understand what you're looking for in the test...

Not at all - the thread went from me not picturing it, to Henry pointing out the Dreadnaught, to me thinking it just might work, and wanting to playtest it. (which is where we are at - with 4 volunteers, so far - if I may include you)

The idea is to make sure that as a controller, he's balanced.  Does this require 1 group or 4? not sure.  If I had WAY more time, I could flesh out an appropriate test.  However, the mediumn (here) and my availability limit anything far-reaching.

So - what's a fair test then?  Groups of 4? (1 of each role, with the appropriate class functioning as controller for each?)

@Johnny: It could work, you would just have to take EXTREME care of the balance between buff (leader) and debuff (controller).  The actual concept seems to be the basis for J_V's dreadnaught.

I have long wanted to see a polearm master class, and given the way polearms already provide some degree of melee control, its not hard for me to envision a "dragoon" or "lancer" class that emphasizes mobility and melee control via polearm. Lots of close blast and close burts effects to simulate swinging the polearm along in wide patterns, and control effects primarily focused on forced movement, knocking prone, dazing and eventually stunning at high levels, with perhaps a few blinding or slowing type crippling strikes. Movement powers like great leaping or unstoppable long distance charging that would allow the dragoon to effect different parts of the battlefield much like a controller would. For example, I could easily see a power that allowed the dragoon to, "jump to any square within 10 squares. upon landing make a close blast 2 attack that pushes all enemies 1 square and knocks them prone." I think such a class would both be relatively easy to fluff as martial within the loose bounds of what is possible for "nonmagical" characters in 4e, and a fun and flavorful addition who would fill a currently unfilled niche.

FYI - For those interested, they talk about a martal controller on Episode 1 of The Power Source (www.powersourcepodcast.com/Home.html).  In the On the In-Psion portion where they talk about the Wizards' Design and Development: Character Classes article they talk about The Explorer the marital class written by Jared Glenn one of the hosts.  It is avail able from the indi publisher Alluria if you are interested.  here is the link to The Explorer page on Alluria's site: www.alluriapublishing.com/explorer.htm

BTW - For all you 3rd Party Publisher haters, sorry in advance that I mention this.

I'm writing up a Dreadnought Character right now and, I have to say, it's an exhilirating thing to write up an actual character for a class I spent so much time working on.  I really look forward to the PbP test.

Maybe something like a monk that does vulcan neck pinches to inflict impairing effects, arm bars and leg locks. Maybe someone that specializes in throat jabs and throwing dirt in your eyes. Nut smashes and hair grabs. Or maybe a bola user or whip user or something could be a martial type controller. These things have probably been talked about already, but thats just some ideas of how a controller could maybe be martial-ish.

I should probably mention (I forgot about this thread until the latest post) - the playtest has started, it can be found in the real adventures group - Dreadnought Playtest. If anyone has any comments regarding the playtest - post them here (not the game thread).  If you have comments regarding the class - the thread for the class in the controller forum - [Class] Dreadnought: Bigger and Meaner than You.
