That's assuming your DM is an unimaginative idiot who can't call for a recovery check.
On Natural 1: Attack automatically misses, no matter the bonus. Roll to Recover: If that roll succeeds, nothing further happens, else... something bad happens
Made the bad thing something that is a complication... something minor or proportional to what is going on. Yep - just what the game needs. More rolling of dice.
I think fumbles are:
1. Very much not fun. 2. Add more complexity. 3. Silly
But that's just me... If your group loves 'em, then have at it!

I treat critical fumbles the same way I did in 3.5 You roll a 1. OH NO!
I roll a d4 to determine whether you 1. drop your weapon 2. drop your weapon/accidently hit wrong target (if something is adjacent to you) 3. hurt yourself/break your bowstring 4. trip and fall prone
No one ever complained more then nessicary don't really see how this 'breaks' the game. If it's a spell I have it damage the caster for simply the die roll no bonuses. They get a recovery check if they have weapon focus or are in the paragon tier, epics don't fumble but still miss on a one regardless.
I don't do fumbles on skills.
Once my faun druid (homebrew) lost her weapon, it was funny simply because she was freaking out and headbutting things left and right. I know most characters don't have natural weapons but punches now do lethal damage, and with some clever thought you can pick your weapon back up easily in most cases.

In our group if we roll a 1 we have to roll again. If it is <10 we drop our weapon at our feet. Not a huge fan of it but it's not a big deal.
However recently we switched DM's to give ours a break and the new DM has taken it further. Now instead of just dropping it he rolls a d4 to see how many spaces away it fell. Now that's lame, if its more than 1 square away it's essentially a daze effect because we have to use a move action to get to the weapon and a minor to pick it up. On top of that he is now talking about having the weapon be destroyed if we roll three 1's in a roll. (Roll attack dice, if 1; roll, if 1; roll, if 1; weapon is destroyed.) Obviously it's very rare but I have seen it happen twice so far in the past month.
Lastly, he thinks that the even trade off is if we roll 3 20's in a row it's an instant kill. Having a +6 weapon getting destroyed != on monster instant death.
