Adventure Hooks are those nifty events that lead your Players into an adventure.

1. Murdering Scum

"Find them. Dead or Alive." Patriarch Azraek leaned forward across his heavy wooden desk and coughed into the bloodsoaked rag. The Bounty Hunter didnt flinch as the odor Ammonia wafted over him from the dying creature before him.
"My fee is..." The Patron cut him off. "Triple your usual fee on return."
"Alright...might I inquire as to why?" Citro the Hunter was not use to getting three times his thousand gold fee.
"They butchered my Son." Azraek tossed the Partchment sketches of the targets to the hunter of men and relaxed back in his heavy timber chair. He waved the Bountyhunter out.

DM BRIEFING: The death of a Villain in a previous encounter has come back to haunt the Party. His Father has put a bounty hunter on them.

2. Any Heroes among Us?

"Ya'all feken cowards!" Rhein the Sworder stumbled back from the bar and threw his clay tankard against the far wall narrowly missing a Patron. The old Swordsman paused in the centre of the Tap Room and looked about.
"How long? Hum? How long...before they come to this village and enslave your families, Rape your Daughters, Burn your Farms, and eat the food off your tables?" He points accusingly at the watching crowd.
"YOu...you're Pathetic! I'll fight them alone if I must." Rhein staggers to the only entrance to the Tavern and pushes his way out past the animal hide covering the doorway...

DM BRIEFING: "They" could be Goblins hold up in a nearby dungeon or a Foreign army marching on the Kingdom. Frankly it could be anyone making this an inspirational recruitment speach for any Party.

Those are good...I've noticed you like grittier more historical feeling stuff but that you still enjoy D&D. Harnmaster has a free download like this called 101 Encounters, have you seen it? (you can download it at lythia.com)

Anyway here's mine:

Pcs come across a pair of wagons on the road. The wagon and cart are ox driven; the animals seem slightly agitated and are being calmed by one armed warrior who is going down the length of the train patting sweating heaving flanks. Another pair are dragging a nearly naked body off the road towards the woods while each wagon has two others who seem to be inspecting bags. A woman wearing a mixture of peasant clothing and mishmash armour is sawing the finger off a body and pulling a ring off said finger; another is drinking from a wineskin with relish.

4. Accompany me as my protectors and you will be rewarded

After defeating a group of bandits, the party finds among the loot an unexpected item: a bound man, frail and unarmed, stern and intelligent.

"I am Menicus Fordswythe, a diplomatic emissary from the city-state of Golenza. I see you all have rare talents in arms and arcana - thank you for defeating my captors. These ruffians overpowered the guard with whom I traveled and were hoping to ransom me, which I warned them was futile.

I have urgent matters of state to convey back to Golenza, and I am over a week late. If you will escort me as protectors I can promise you a rich reward and recommend you to those with interest in heroic talent. There is much call for individuals with your skills in the great city."

DM BRIEFING Delivering Menicus back to Golenza is a quest that should involve a half dozen perilous encounters on the road - half random encounters, half pertaining to some underlying plot or intrigue. Menicus can be a useful NPC in explaining to the PCs the backstory for a subsequent adventure to be launched from Golenza. ["Golenza" can of course be any city, castle, keep etc. which might send an emissary to a nearby state.]

5. They left their wagons?

"There is something wrong here Furst. Merchants wouldnt just abandon their Wagons, and Bandits wouldnt just leave the booty." Dargo Furst stared at the Wagon.
"Granted, but we shood still take them...even if it is to the next village."
Azeer the Sorcerer nodded.

DM Briefing: The PCs find abandoned wagons halted on the road. THere is no sign of a fight, or owner. Delivering the Wagons to the next village, they are accused of being murderers and thieves.

6. Escape the Jail

After being jailed unfairly ther party msut escape the prison in time to stop the viscious murder of a local lord, all the while trying to prove the innocence.

DM Briefing: Especially for Arcane characetrs escaping the prison should involve no combat if possible, reasons for this could be sedation allowing arcane characters only acsess to cantrips or whatever other reasons that seem like they could world.
