I've got a god I'm trying to put together for a homebrew pantheon. Isitrix a goddess of mystery, riddles, darkness, and obsession. My inspiration for her comes from a couple different sources:
1. She's not really evil, and she's not really good. Though some people are convinced that she's one or the other, her motivations are completely inhuman. She interacts with the mortals of the world, but some believe that she is giving timely warnings and aid while others see her as a harbinger of doom who brings disaster wherever she goes. This is heavily drawn from The Mothman Prophecies, and only slightly from the actual reports of Mothmen.
2. She dwells deep underground, and has an eerie, alien appearance. Her image is well known from ancient paintings on cave walls. Many believe that in the past, she helped raise mortals out of the savagery of their races' infancies by teaching them how to master their world. I get a lot of "Ancient Astronauts" vibes from this, that Isitrix shows up in the distant past to teach cavemen how to make fire and all that. In terms of appearance, I kind of mentally channel Gollum and also imagine the Mothman again, with huge, pale eyes and distorted features.
3. She's morally ambiguous. I've got a couple of ideas here. One is that she was the first of a race of angels sent to teach mortals. The gods wanted them to build themselves up through civilization, but Isitrix and her angelic brethren grew disgusted with the undisciplined, unscrupulous mortals and turned their back on them, abandoning the realms of mortals for a self-imposed exile in the Underdark. The other idea is that she used to favor the orcs and helped them to conquer much of the world. Only now that her will seems to have shifted have humans been able to crawl back from the brink of destruction.
Anyway, I've got some writer's block with this, so I thought I'd open up what I wrote so far to the community and see if anyone has any ideas or suggestions.
