Between the top two maps here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/4pr/20080509a(The town of winterhaven, and the subsequent overview map with Winterhaven on it) On the town map, there is one road leading away from the town, point 1 on the map, going east then south. But on the overview map, there appears to be three roads leading from Winterhaven - north-east, south-south-east, and south east! Am I being pedantic, and can someone explain this please? (Or is it down to a lack of imagination on my part... ah well... I just woke up, so I may be ratty....)

I think your just being a bit too literal in looking at the overview map. It is quite likely that the actual town of Winterhaven lies off the intersection of the 2 roads and is accessed by a smaller road pictured in the town map. The overview map has a dot representing winterhaven directly in the intersection, but the town is probably not exactly there.

yea I thought that, and I subsequentially thought that the map-maker was lazy... I'm awake now... *sigh*
I don't think that now, and I think I will order H1, even if I don't have a group to play, and I have exams to take care of (nghh). It will be nice to read through, at least.

It is just the road up the hill from the King's highway. Nothing to worry about. IN fact maybe there is village at the bottem of the hill to account for the 977 population?
My only problem with it is that i wish they had the road coming up the hill from the north instead of the south, so the attackers' shields can't easily protect them. (That trick is in a bunch or books I've read lately.)

The road to Winterhaven splits off of a junction to the southeast of the town just off the edge of the map. It's easier to defend with one main entrypoint rather than three. At least that's what I believed the authors were thinking when I painted the map.

From what I understand, hunderds of people are supposed to have their farms around the village.

Did you do the "overworld" map? If so, can you tell us why there's so little space around the village? From what I understand, hunderds of people are supposed to have their farms around the village. I wanted to indicate that the entire area was wooded and sparsely populated. You can assume that there are clearings and houses scattered throughout the woods, particularly in the area immediately around Winterhaven. Since it's a fairly small map though, I didn't want it to become cluttered with non essential details.
