DEFINITELY new iconic characters. The old ones were iconic - for 3rd edition. It's time for them to retire, we need new blood.

And for the record: Kill Mialee (but don't feed her to the lions, the poor critters need meat, not bones)

FINALLY GIVE US A HOT ELVEN CHICK!

I want some new iconics. I've had enough of Mialee's ugly mug, and I just don't want the books to feel too familiar.

I can't say there's any specific combinations I want to see, but I would like to see a new PHB race as an iconic for an old class-something of a fresh face on a tired concept. For that matter, I wouldn't mind some swapping the races around for the iconics-have a barbarian that's not a half-orc, or a monk that isn't a human, for example. I want to see some new ideas for a new system, not a small remake of what we have.

If you're going to have iconics, make new ones, and do them right. There needs to be a small number so that they become recognizable. They need to be charismatic and interesting. I can't think of a single 3rd edition iconic that I liked at all.

I'd say go with anywhere from 1 to 5 iconics. If I had to pick just one, I'd go with a female elf fighter (or perhaps fighter/wizard, bladesinger style). If tastefully and effectively done, it would be interesting and intriguing to both sexes.

Don't give us stupid-looking iconics because they used Charisma as a dump stat. You're defeating the point. If they're a marketing tool, follow marketing rules in their design and use. If they're intended as examples of play, then don't treat them as iconics -- treat them as singular examples and go with it.

Get some decent artists to contribute for them this time. Oi but the third edition character art was painful.

Either way, let's see some real direction with it, eh?

A) Create new iconics.

Frankly, I don't much like iconics. But I concede that they are useful. They provide characters to use in examples, and continuity between books that allows for better flavor shorts to be written. You know, the little blurbs of story pieces that illustrate aspects of the game. For some reason iconics don't appeal to me, but these two things are important enough that I concede their usefulness.

I picked "create new iconics" over "port the old ones" just because I feel that newly created iconics will fit better with a new system. No chance the designers accidentally try to create 3rd edition characters with 4th edition rules, just because they're used to the iconics being that way. No chance players will compare the new iconics to the old ones and proclaim that you guys didn't do them right.

B) I don't care. Something bland and obvious, or else it won't be "iconic." Elf Ranger.

I shall go with:
A) Get some new iconic characters.
B) Get a tiefling druid. Something that screams outlandish choices abound.

A) Out with the old, in with the new!
B) See A. Let's shake up the old stereotypes a little.

A: 2 we need new iconics for a new edition. 4th edition is supposed to be exiciting and new, it's icons should be no less.
B: 1-Human fighter in fullplate- nothing says defence like full plate
2-Elven rogue- graceful and deadly
I think there should at least 2 Iconics per class, one who synergizes class and race and one that goes against the "grain". WoTC should hold a iconics contest after releasing the race and class info. The DnD community could vote on their favorite submissions, it may bring out some truly awesome icons.
