I have nothing against characters that go against stereotypes, but no beardless dwarfs, please. That's just pushing it to far...

"Not the beard"

Although Jozan is a pretty cool guy, I don't want him to be the iconic cleric of the new edition. He appears almost 2-d in 3.x and doesn't capture the vast flavor options a cleric actually has. Pelor is an easy deity for beginners, and can be complex if you try, but it can also be a bland rut that is hard to get out of for beginners. So, show off some quirky clerics. Something like a CG Dwarven cleric of Olidimmara or a LN halfling cleric of Big H. Avoid vanilla with the clerics. Just because they are clerics doesn't mean they are like our priests of today.

The other iconics are pretty much fine. The bard could use some help, but Gimble just needs more support.

No, I've never played a dwarf rogue but I've wanted to for a long time ;]

That's nuts! dwarves have no skin under their beards! If they shave they bleed to death in a disgusting scene.

A) Create New Iconics for 4ED
B) Dwarf Paladin

I think that Iconics help draw together generics settings, and lend consistency throughout core rulebooks.

As for the Dwarf Paladin-Dwarves are displayed as religious, honorable, and fighter-types. That just screams paladin.

A. New Iconics.

B. Characters that actually show different ways to play the same class as previously stated. Such as a rogue who is more of a gather information/face and then one that prefers to keep to the shadows and do the stabby bits. I'd love to see a changeling rogue as one of the iconics, but that's probably going to need to wait for Eberron.

It would also be helpful to have characters that are of the various alignments (assuming, of course, that we still have alignments) and how it affects their actions, particularly in mixed alignment parties. The one paragraph descriptions from 3/3.5 need some improvements.

Yes!

Erm, well, no, but still...

A. New Iconics

B. Orc Barbarian. Covered in warpaint and/or the blood of his (or her) enemies, and preferably doing the Cap'n Morgan on a pyramid of ex-kobolds.

A. New Iconics. I liked Tordek, but Mialee almost ruined elves for me, and ruined elves for another member of the "2e Loves Elves Club" (during our "To buy 3.5 or not split").

B. Elf Rogue: The true favored class for elves.
Dwarven Fighter: Always a classic for us.
HAlf-Orc Monk: Best combo ever!
Halfling Barbarian: Always fun to have!
Aasimar Paladin
Human Bard
Tiefling Wizard
Drow Sorcerer
Half-Elf Ranger
Dwarf Cleric
Human Druid
Maenad Wilder
Elan Psion
Half-Giant Soulknife
Human psychic warrior

And... if possible... Cactacae fighter, for when New Crozubon finally becomes a setting...

There ya go.

I agree with most that new Iconics are in order.

I think these might be cool options:

Eladrin Wizard
Elf Ranger
Drow Rogue
Dwarf Fighter
Half-Elf Warlord
Halfling Cleric
Half-Dragon Warlock
Tiefling Bard

BTW, I don't know if anyone has suggested this yet, but it seems to me that the H1 Adventure coming out before the PHB will likely have any new Iconics.

A. New iconics with personalities. I'd like to see a chapter about magic written like an experienced wizard was explaining the concept to a non-caster or his adept or the equipment section with a guy that just loves swords (imagine description of the great axe: "That one's a great axe. I wouldn't give a second glance, but if you insist on looking like a dirty barbarian...").
B. Simply - dwarf cleric, human fighter, elf ranger etc.
Motto - Don't Damn Me, Guns N' Roses
