And taht's the difference between some who is good at it and someone who thinks he is good at it. I homebrew quite a lot myself. When I've crafted a real winner of a houserule, I can tell by the way they keep using the rule or referring to it, even if it's not something that gives them any kind of advantage. But when I miss, the guys have no compunctions about letting me know I've missed! (Curious what you're doing with the APs...)
Mobar2008 Thanks. The whole reason we allowed the Almighty to do a cameo was because she wanted to be part of the fun, but was very serious about references to other gods, even make-believe ones. She didn't mind if others did, but she always saw herself as a figurative holy warrior, so the cleric was her class of choice. It was a good fit, too, until the whole "calling on God to smite the enemy" thing. She really thought she should have been allowed to have them all drop dead instantly! Not at level 1, and certainly NOT against a humanoid army of over 1000. (They were trying to sabotage the seige engines.) Yeah, I just don't understand why some people have no problem pretending they are breaking heads, but completely freak when they have to choose a fictional god for their fictional character.

Why in the world would someone think a handful of physical-damage d6s on an attack action needs nerfing? Depends on how many is 'a handful' and how often.

Not sure if this counts as a house rule or not, but I know a DM who interprets rule 0 to mean "I have absolute control over *everything* in the game world." "Even our PCs?" the players will ask. "Especially your PCs." should be his reply.
I.E., the players come up with a clever way to break into an imperial bunker in a star wars game using explosives, instead of the GMs intended method of fighting through the storm troopers at the front gate. GMs reply? "no you don't."
not arbitrary failure, not ridiculous penalties, no, these are the railroading techniques of *lesser men*. This GM literally tells the players that their characters will not do something the players want them to. Players see through the poorly disguised assassin NPC the DM has in their midst? No, you think he's your friend. "no we don't, he just killed the barkeep for no reason with a poisoned dagger; he's clearly an assassin, we attack him." No you don't, you think he's your friend, why would you? "fine, bluff vs. sense motive. ha! he rolls a 1!" too bad, you still think he's your friend.
It's like Tic-tac-toe, or maybe Global Thermonuclear War. The only winning move is not to play.

The 'unstated' houserule that when the DM's character-killing, pet, uber-monster is defeated by smart characters who out-think the DM... the monster's treasure suddenly gets reduced about 90% from book value.
