Looking for War Stories

Most gaming groups have sessions which have become legendary. Spectacular deaths, hilarious quotes, surprising plot twists - all of these may be reasons why a particular evening is talked about again and again. Sometimes they are told online, and others can be shown how awesome gaming can be in its best moments.

But sadly, too many of these stories are scattered across the depths of the Internet. I pondered this two days ago, and then had my usual idea - create a wiki for them:

The War Stories Wiki

Five stories by various people are already online so far:

Captain John McCleod
The Hundred Year Old Indian
The Marriage Of Frisco Flagons
The Nasty, Brutish, and Short Werewolf Game
The Trouble With Gankorou

I hope to see some of your stories up there as well in the future!

Ah, let me sort through a few and put them properly into text! Fortunately, I wound up marrying the star of most of the stories, our wizard player. I can bounce them off of him for accuracy. Some teasers:

The Legend of Borg the Bold and Carl the Cautious*
The Loudmouth and the Matron Mother*
Ickity-Ackity-Oop-Ick-Ick!
Great shot! *Slap!* *Thud!*
Jumping In A Wild Magic Zone
Why Kobolds Shouldn't Have Guns
The Caves of Chaos (Tikka Tikka Tikka)
The Caves of Chaos 2 (Stormy the Pincushion and the Gnolls)
Of Apes and Acolytes
How Not to Use Haste, Bull's Strength, and Expeditious Retreat
Meet Chanel
Beware of Shadow Dragons Bearing Coffee
"I Wish the Wizard Was Like Rambo On Crack!"

Some of these were OOG mistakes that took on a life of their own in-game. I'll write them up as time permits. There have been plenty of others, as I've been in this since '81, but these are the ones leaping forth right now. The main characters for most of these, however, are Uffy, a wizard (played by my now-husband) who is now legendary at my table, and Stormbringer, or Stormy, and elf fighter played by my now-brother-in-law.

*These have been posted elsewhere on this site. I'll try to recall the details as best as I can if I can't find the originals.
Give a player a fish, and he’ll probably try to sell it to an NPC fisherman.

Teach a player to fish, and next week he’ll show up with the book, “The Complete Adventuring Fisherman”. He’ll start hunting for some monstrous leviathan to catch and enslave, and he’ll be dual-wielding two fishing poles.

Beware of Shadow Dragons Bearing Coffee

Stormy and Uffy had been on the run after having used up every spell, piece of ammo, and weapon they had. Unarmed and unarmored, they ducked into a side passage in the dungeon and found themselves surprisingly in a very comfortably appointed room... inhabited by a shadow dragon.

They freaked and started looking for weapons. Then the shadow dragon did something unexpected. He offered them some coffee. Surprised, they hesitantly accepted. The coffee was nice and hot and delicious.

STORMY: Wow. I thought dragons were hell-bent on eating anything that popped into their lairs. I guess that ain't so, eh? (Stormy's player then mimicked chugging the cup of coffee while Uffy's player mimicked sipping the coffee.) Mm, got any more?

DRAGON: Oh, I do plan to eat you... after you finish your coffee.

UFFY: And I give you my word that I'll be back after I finish this cup of coffee.

Stormy and the dragon engaged in a helluva melee bout with Stormy mostly ducking and dodging before being able to get away. While this was going on, Uffy slipped away unnoticed.

Uffy stayed true to his word, however, and 14 levels later he finished the last sip of coffee (magically preserved over the years), returned to the shadow dragon's lair, returned the cup (all washed), and got medieval on the shadow dragon's heiny.

So as well as shadow dragons bearing coffee, beware of wizards' promises. They just might keep them!

Nice! Do you mind if I add it to the Wiki?

(Though you could add it to yourself - after all, this is a wiki. And this page explains how...)

Feel free to add it! Any of the ones I write up for here may be posted for all the world to read and do with as they will.

I've added it here. I've also added a link to your original post.

Great shot! *Slap!* *Thud!*

Stormy and Uffy were wiping out a bunch of cultists who had been funding themselves through a crime wave. They had been on each other's nerves for the whole dungeon, taking jabs at one another. Right before the final battle, Stormy had gotten the last insult in. During the fight, many of Uffy's spells were Area of Effect type spells that often included Stormy in their area. With Stormy barely alive by the near-end of the battle, three cultists mad a run for it. Stormy was hot on their heels while Uffy yelled that he was gonig to cast Fireball. We reminded Uffy's player that Stormy had gone down the hallway in pursuit of the cultists.

"Heh-heh... I know..." came the response.

Uffy let the Fireball fly. Stormy and one cultist made their saving throws while the other two perished in an arcane blaze. Stormy was down to 5 hp, the surviving cultist was down to 1. Stormy told the cultist "Take him down and I'll let you walk out of here." The cultist gave his mace a hefty throw and nailed Uffy right square in the family jewels (we had a hit location chart). It was a crit that knocked Uffy unconcious from pain.

With such a flushing success, Stormy's character shouted "Great shot!" and made a very, very enthusiastic slap-on-the-back motion with his hand. With the cultist in such terrible shape, I had Stormy roll a d20. Hit. 1d3 damage vs a 1hp cultist? Thud! No more cultists! Oops.

Cool. I keep hoping someone else has war stories. I can't be the only person playing noteworthy games!
