I'm currently playing my second "Persistant" buffing cleric, and I've noticed that most spells aren't legit for persisting. I also noticed that the current "Persistant Spell" thread is quite old and no longer being maintained or updated. So, since the "Complete XXXX" and "Races of XXXX" books are done, I figured it was about time we had a new thread for this stuff. Thanks to the contributors so far. If you see any errors or omissions, please send me a Private Message (don't post, I might not see it) and I'll get it added/fixed right away. I've done the spoiler tags to make it more readable so that you're not scrolling through massive spell lists and what-not. Just makes it easier to read in my opinion. Divine Persistant Spell FAQSpoiler:
Show
Q: How do you Persist a level 4+ spell as a Cleric? A: Divine Metamagic (Persistant Spell)!
Q: Where is Divine Metamagic? A: Complete Divine
Q: Where is Persistant Spell? A: The latest printing of it is in Complete Arcane.
Q: Does Divine Metamagic (Persistent Spell) have any prerequisites? The wording is unclear! A: Yes! To take Divine Metamagic, you must already have the Metamagic feat you are applying it to. That is, Persistent Spell (and it's prerequisite, Extend Spell) is required.
Q: Are there any Cleric Domains that can help ease my feat woes? A: Yes! Planning Domain (it's in Complete Warrior) gives Extend Spell as a bonus feat. Undeath Domain (I forget the source) gives Extra Turning as a bonus feat too. I personally like Human Paragon (from Unearthed Arcana), also. 1 caster level hit nets you +2 to a stat, a bonus feat, some great skills, and Adaptive Learning.
Q: What are the rules for Persisting a spell? A: 2 requirements. Fixed/Personal range and non-discharge/instantaneous spell. Fixed range means "60 feet" or "100 ft + 10 ft/level". Detect Magic is an example of a fixed range spell. Despite it being technically legal, Wizards has deemed Time Stop not persistable by saying that the 1d4+1 rounds is "effectively instaneous" for the purpose of Persistant Spell. Note: the definition of "fixed" is also debatable. Some choose to interpret the "+10 ft/level" as non-fixed. ASK YOUR DM for his/her interpretation on this matter.
Q: What about Touch spells?!?!?! A: Touch spells are a topic of debate. I emailed Customer Service myself to ask, and they said Touch spells are ok. This is contradictory to most interpretations of the SRD, but it's what they said. My advice, ask your DM. Remember, though, many touch spells "discharge" (Ray of XXX, Orb of XXX, etc) and explicity cannot be persisted. Nor can "Ranged Touch" spells, as a ranged touch is not "fixed".

don't forget that persistant spell is now +6 so anything over lv3 can't be done
Divine Metamagic (Persistant Spell) takes care of that quite nicely. Persist 2 spells a day by level 3. But this is an entirely different topic. I'd like for this thread to be strictly a listing of spells that are valid for persisting.

What is the errata/clarification? I'll look it up for myself in a few seconds, just thought it might be nice to see it together with the list. I agree, Gol, the old list is just that, old. I'm just starting a lvl 11 cleric, appreciate the new list!

What is the errata/clarification?
Spells with a Range of "Touch" cannot be persisted.

To add a couple of my personal favorites:
Consumptive Field (Libris Mortis): When made Persistent, this spell essentially means unlimited temporary hit points and a 50% increase to your caster level.
Wraithstrike (Complete Adventurer): Turns all your attacks into touch attacks. What's not to love?
Swift Haste (Complete Adventurer): Haste is not a Personal spell, thus not Persistable. Swift Haste IS a Personal spell. Persistent Haste isn't nearly as godlike as it would have been in third edition, but it's still very nice to have.
