How are those DCs at that level? I suppose you've taken Master Specialist, which means you have Greater spell focus, but is that enough to drag a low level spell to effectiveness? Surprisingly good. The character in question is a Wizard 4/Beguiler 1/Ultimate Magus 5, and just got sculpt spell at UM5. Starting as a gray elf and buying a +4 int item means he's got a 26 int right now (+8), and regular spell focus conjuration, for a will save DC 21. It's no longer viable when you cast it essentially on a single foe (10' square is hard to fill with enemies), but if you can get a couple guys with it, you can do pretty well, since some of them will probably fail their will saves. The will save is usually pretty bad on lots of foes, but it's starting to fade pretty quickly. I bet by the time we hit level 12 or so, I'll have swapped for an entirely new tactic. But for now, it's not mind-affecting (so it works on undead, plants tend to have blindsight), it is SR:No (golems), and it targets a save that is traditionally the worst on most monsters. It's not the end of the story as far as spells go, but it's pretty darn good still.

Yes, you can shape glitterdust, and grease as well. But it just seems like a waste of a feat to get sculpt spell when its battlefield control application is rather limited. It would seem that just grabbing the lesser rod of sculpt spell for 3000 would be a better investment than spending a feat to get the actual feat.

True enough. I hadn't seen the distinction you were making until just now - the difference between a spell with an Area entry and one with an Effect entry that describes an Area is definitely a funny one. A stickler would probably disallow it, but a generous DM might still allow it.

You can't sculpt everything - that is true - however - lots of things can be sculpted. Here's a list of spells that you might want to sculpt (not nearly comprehensive) - I believe they are all legally sculpted: : This spell is nice for scultping Acid Breath Evard's Black Tentacles Glitterdust Hail of Stone Sleet Storm Vitrolic Sphere Airy Water Antimagic Field Blacklight Cloud of Bewilderment Color Spray Fear Reverse Gravity Transmute Rock to Mud Vertigo Field Waves of Exhaustion However, metamagic Rods are great - and a lesser sculpt rod is a good investment. I would recommend picking up the regular Rod later on though for Evard's, Antimagic Field and Reverse Gravity!
